WWE Calls out Glen Beck 5

The challenge is issued at about the one-and-a-half minute mark.

Aside:

First Son was quite the wrestling fan back in the days of Rowdy Roddy Piper. For his birthday one year I took him to the Spectrum for a WWF meet. They do put on quite the show.

Me, I don’t think pro wrestling has been the same since Rip Hawk and Swede Hanson retired. There hasn’t been anyone since like Ripper and the Swede.

Via C&L, which has background on the feud with the Beckster. (My money is on WWE. Higher IQ.)

I was a fan of Piper’s. Funny thing, he never seemed to win any matches. His crowning moment as an entertainer, I believe, will always be the longest fight scene in modern movie history in They Live.

I think he was comic relief.

I miss Ripper and the Swede.  I saw Rip Hawk interviewed once when I was a young ‘un.  He was actually quite witty.

That was back when the bad guys were all blond and the good guys were all dark-haired and the bad guys would ostentatiously reach into their trunks for the brass knuckles.

The irony is, that once Pro Wrestling admitted that it was a show (albeit a dangerous one–those guys are athletes of a sort), ratings went up.

I once took Second Son to a local pro-wrestling match at the auditorium of of a local Catholic school near Wilmington, Delaware.  It was a hoot, complete with folding-chair fights and all the accoutrements of the Bigs, without the production values.  I think I still have a refrigerator magnet honoring one of the wrestling wannabes.

Yes, for me and my brother and a friend it was old Saturday tv that no one wanted to watch, an audience of such shallow pocket most advertisers wouldn’t touch them. And they were far from the steroid-gobbling physical fitness freaks most of them are now. Even old Jesse Ventura never really looked that built up. They were just naturally big men, sometimes in a lot of disrepair. Zeb Colter and the real Americans thing has kinda succeeded the Iron Sheik who they recognized would galvanize the audience because it was the time of the Iran hostage crisis. So the Tea Party and Glenn Beck have an image as grand as the cartoon Iranians now. That’s progress.

At C&L, where I picked up the link, the blogger pointed out that, if the teabaggers have lost the WWE, they’ve probably lost America (at least all but old white Southerners, who seem solider than ever).
