Tidewater Unix Users Group

When: Monthly TWUUG meeting at 7:30 p. m. on the first Thursday of the month (August 2, 2018). Pre-meeting dinner at Chicago Uno, JANAF shopping center, 6:00 p. m. (map)

Who: Everyone in TideWater/Hampton Roads with interest in any/all flavors of Unix/Linux. There are no dues or signup requirements. All are welcome.

Where: Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital in Norfolk Training Room (map). (Wireless and wired internet connection available.) Turn right upon entering, then left at the last corridor and look for the open meeting room.

    About a decade ago I tried six of the most popular Linux distros. 5 of them had no sound because they didn’t like my extremely common sound card. The last helpfully informed me there was no internet connection; wrong again.
    Have they gotten any better since then?

    They sure have!

    The issue here is not that Linux does not support some hardware, but rather that some hardware manufacturers do not support Linux, or do not support it well.

    In 13 years of using Linux, I’ve not encountered a sound problem, but Broadcom and Realtek wireless and NVidia graphics can sometimes be annoying. Generally, you can get them working, but it sometimes takes some extra steps. Intel inside generally works smoothly, because of Intel’s excellent support of Linux. There may be a lag in getting support for bleeding edge hardware into the Linux kernel.
