Pitching while Brown 0

I can be a fan of this San Francisco Giant:

Forget the World Series trophy and caravan of luxury convertibles.

The biggest showstopper at the San Francisco Giants’ victory parade might have been lovable relief pitcher Sergio Romo’s T-shirt. Or more precisely, the message on the front: “I just look illegal.”

(snip)

Immigrant activists around the country interpreted it as a satirical message about a term that many say dehumanizes immigrants in the country illegally — as well as American-born Latinos like Romo.

“You cannot tell who looks ‘illegal,'” tweeted Bay Area activist and journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, thanking Romo for taking a stand. “No human being is illegal.”

A new Lothario is prowling the pubs, and, as Robyn Blumner points out, he’s taken “How To Pick Up Girls” to heart:

Just as with every other relationship in our lives — husbands, partners, friends, co-workers — trust is essential. Trusting those around us gives us confidence that we have a firm grasp on the world we inhabit. So too, if we can’t trust our leaders we won’t know what kind of world they’ll build. It is this test that Romney has failed.

Like an overeager suitor, Romney morphs into whatever is desired at the moment. No doubt you’ve known a guy who claims to be into you when he wants something. Romney is that guy.

Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

For all practical purposes, no change:

Applications for jobless benefits fell 9,000 to 363,000 in the week ended Oct. 27, the fewest in three weeks, the Labor Department reported today in Washington. Economists forecast 370,000 claims, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey. Data for New Jersey and the District of Columbia were estimated because those offices were closed due to Hurricane Sandy, a spokesman said as the figures were released.

(snip)

The four-week moving average, a less-volatile measure, fell to 367,250 from 368,750.

The number of people continuing to collect jobless benefits rose by 4,000 to 3.26 million in the week ended Oct. 20. The continuing claims figure does not include the number of workers receiving extended benefits under federal programs.

I would expect an increase next week, due to the recent spell of bad weather in the Northeast.

Search and Rescue 0

In the third segment of this episode of the Cathy Lewis Show, Cathy interviews one of the Coast Guard officers involved in rescuing the crew of the H. M. S. Bounty, which foundered during Sandy. (The first part of the show is about the effects of and reaction to Sandy in these here parts.)

If you listen with the “On Demand” feature at the website, the interview starts about 45 minutes in. If you download and listen to the *.mp3, it starts about 40 minutes in (the *.mp3 does not include the “news at the top of the hour”).

You Can’t Get There from Here 0

The bridge over the railroad tracks in Narberth always looked rickety to me as I crossed it back when I lived there. It still looked rickety when I took First Daughter to lunch at the Greeks’ back in July (and she got me a Greek’s 90th Anniversay tee-shirt!).

Now it’s closed.

Abandon Ship 0

Second son worked on this ship last winter:

The crew of the Bounty abandoned ship about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras early Monday morning, several hours after first reporting that the ship was in distress, Fredrick said. They donned cold water suits and life jackets and boarded the life rafts, the Coast Guard said.

The 180-foot, three-mast tall ship had lost propulsion and was taking on water. Postings on the Facebook page of the HMS Bounty reported the ship was sinking.
