Cardinal Sins 0

Let no sin go unrewarded.

Retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahoney is soon off to Rome to vote on a successor to St. Peter, even though Mahoney was recently stripped of public duties by his successor after documents revealed he helped cover up scores of clerical sex abuse cases in the 1980s.

Archbishop Jose Gomez, who did the stripping, nonetheless is asking the faithful to pray for Cardinal Mahoney. Gomez is confident that his predecessor’s experience will serve “well” as cardinals work “to discern the will of the Holy Spirit” and elect a new pope.

Ireland’s Cardinal Sean Brady will be joining Mahoney in Rome. Two years ago, it was revealed that Brady swore to secrecy in 1975 two boys who were repeatedly abused by a monk and serial pedophile.

Additional comment superfluous.

The thousands of unmarried Virginia couples who are living together would no longer be breaking the law under legislation advanced by a House committee.

The House Courts of Justice Committee on Friday unanimously approved Sen. Adam Ebbin’s bill repealing Virginia’s 136-year-old law against what the state calls “lewd and lascivious cohabitation.”

“Necessity is the mother of invention” is a silly proverb. “Necessity is the mother of futile dodges” is much nearer the truth.

Droning On 0

Oh, so now it’s a “booming industry.”

. . . the FAA announced Thursday that it would pick six locales for test runs — and Florida is among the 35 or more competitors expected to vie for the chance to open its airways as soon as this fall.

“This research will give us valuable information about how best to ensure the safe introduction of this advanced technology into our nation’s skies,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a statement.

Although no money is attached, officials in Florida and elsewhere see the competition as an opportunity to get a jump on the booming drone industry, which is expected to almost double in size from $6.6 billion in global spending now to $11.4 billion in 10 years.

Follow the money and watch fat cats feast on our private lives.

Nip and Duct 0

North Carolina Republican state Rep. Tim Moore says that women can protect themselves from a new law that makes baring female breasts illegal by simply applying duct tape to their nipples.

On Wednesday, the (North Carolina–ed.) state House Judiciary Committee C approved House Bill 34, which makes it a Class H felony to purposefully expose “private parts” for the “purpose of arousing or gratifying sexual desire.”

The bill expands the state’s definition of “private parts” to include a woman’s “nipple, or any portion of the areola.”

Republican state Rep. Rayne Brown told lawmakers that she was co-sponsoring the bill because activists had held a topless women’s rights rally in Asheville last summer, where as many as a dozen women bared their breasts.

It would be a Republican.

They are notoriously afeared of lady parts.

I rather doubt that women at a women’s rights rally are particularly interested in “arousing or gratifiying sexual desire,” but the skeevy Republican preoccupation with sex–oh, never mind, it’s just skeevy.

An Idiot with a Computer Is Still an Idiot 2

Having been a boater, I am failed by words at this.

Daniel McBride, 39, was operating his 36-foot Concept vessel — powered by three 300 horsepower engines — around 10:30 p.m. Monday when he missed South Sound Creek in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park waters, crossed Airport Flat and went up on the mangrove island just south of South Sound Creek.

(snip)

Dube said alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash. Rather, McBride had his GPS setting too wide for the area and had the incorrect background lighting selected.

Afterthought:

He. Missed. The. Creek.

Really.
