“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Spread politeness throughout your family.

Police said Adele Bing, 52, had an argument with her boyfriend, James Lane, earlier in the day and allegedly hit him with a gun. Lane went to the hospital to be treated for his injuries when officers said they received a call about a shooting at Adele Bing’s home.

Authorities said Ruby Bing went to visit her mother and knocked at her front door while holding her 4-month-old baby.

Police said Adele Bing was still upset about the argument she had with Lane and thought he was the person knocking.

Investigators said Adele Bing armed herself with a baseball bat and a handgun, and as she opened the door, she fired a shot, hitting her daughter in the upper chest. The 4-month-old was not injured, but Ruby Bing died at the scene.

And that’s just one of the stories of politeness I’ve seen so far today and, as I write this, I’ve not finished my second cup of coffee. Here’s another.

The holidays seem to be fostering a proliferation of courtesy.

Isn’t it comforting?

A. Because Hate Sells 0

Dick Polman wonders why Republicans fell for the patently false wingnut charge that President Obama is closing the U. S. Embassy to the Vatican (he’s not, never was, never would) and why Republicans are so susceptible to lies and lying liars.

Hopefully, on some not too distant day, a smart historian with a degree in psychology will look back on this era and analyze why so many conservatives have become allergic to factual reality. This psychosis has manifested itself so often – among the birthers, the skeet shoot paranoids, the Gettysburg truthers, the list is endless – that one is tempted to simply ignore the behavior. But no. In the name of rationalism, it needs to be called out.

“Don’t Get Sick. If You Do Get Sick, Die Quickly.” 0

Lee Witting tees off on a recent column attacking the ACA in his local rag.

It’s a masteful takedown. A nugget:

The Republicans have no answers for the people who can’t afford coverage under today’s profit-driven system of outrageous rates, junk policies, claims caps and denials of coverage to those with pre-existing conditions. Up until the implementation of Obamacare, this country had the worst system of health care coverage in the industrialized world. This is the mess that really matters — and not all the hypocritical noise being made about website problems, birth control coverage causing wanton sex or anything else opponents can drum up.
