Don’t Parade on That Rain 0

(Link fixed.)

The Orlando Sentinel reports (emphasis added), with a refreshing breath of candor:

If you’re one of many drivers who has switched on your car’s hazard lights while negotiating heavy rain, guess what: You’ve broken the law.

But it’s not too likely you’re going to get a ticket for it.

Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky said the law is probably not very frequently enforced, noting that both the officer and driver would get “soaked” if a citation was issued in the pouring rain.

Drivers’ flashing four-ways when there is no good reason irritates the heck out of me.

(The rationale for the law is to keep drivers from confusing ordinary vehicles with police cars and ambulances.)

More politeness for the children.

Wilmington police say a 5-year-old girl has been shot outside her home.

He (Cpl. Mark Ivey–ed.) says the girl was standing outside her home when she was shot in the right leg.

Be polite to the children.

The Oakland Tribune (http://bit.ly/15OQ8w6 ) says the Oakland girl was on a sleepover with a friend inside the apartment when a man opened fire on the building shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. She died at a hospital.

The shooting also wounded a 4-year-old boy, his 7-year-old sister and their 64-year-old grandmother. They’re hospitalized in stable condition Thursday and are expected to recover.

Party politely.

St. Louis Homicide detectives report just before midnight the men were driving on Chestnut on the north side of Kiener Plaza when one of the men in the car dumped beer inside the vehicle, sparking an argument.

Another man in in the car upset over the spill then got into an argument with the man who dumped the drink. That man got a gun and fired several shots at the victim, striking him repeatedly in the chest. The 29 year old victim was dead at the scene.

If Spuds MacKenzie had had a gun, this no doubt would not have happened.

Droning On in Florida 0

A United States military drone presumed to be a QF-4 crashed, exploded and sent up a large black cloud of smoke Wednesday morning at Tyndall Air Force Base. Following the accident, the UAV reportedly went up in flames and started a ground fire, prompting authorities to close nearby Highway 98. They’ve reported no injuries.

The item doesn’t answer the overriding question in the public mind:

In Florida, huh! How long had the left blinker been on?

Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

A little better, but still in the same ballpark:

Jobless claims dropped by 24,000 to 334,000 in the week ended July 13, the fewest since early May, from a revised 358,000 the prior period, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington.

(snip)

The four-week moving average, a less volatile measure than the weekly figures, fell to 346,000 last week from 351,250.

The number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits climbed by 91,000 to 3.11 million in the week ended July 6, the most in five months. That caused the unemployment rate among people eligible for benefits to rise to 2.4 percent, the highest since early April, from 2.3 percent.

Practice, politely.

. . . the offending customer was firing a Smith & Wesson pistol that was “rather new” to him in a neighboring lane at Wade’s range. As the man raised his arms to shoot, the other customer accidentally fired through the foam lane divider.

The 9 mm bullet struck the man in the right arm, powered through it, then tore through his left arm as well, leaving him seriously injured, according to the lawsuit.

Yes, it does say “foam lane divider.”

Republican legislator argues that public education fosters dependency–on the part of the parents:

On Tuesday, Deseret News flagged a Friday article posted to state Sen. Aaron Osmond’s blog where he says that Utah “should take a close look at repealing compulsory education.”

Osmond argues that requiring children to attend school has caused some parents to “completely disengage themselves from their obligation to oversee and ensure the successful education of their children.”

More at the link.

I’ve known “disengaged” parents. They would have been disengaged in any event.

Nevertheless, it’s a novel twist on the right-wing effort to destroy public schools.

Republicans and the charter schools scammers are not going to rest until ignorance reigns, because ignorance is their friend.
