Douglas Adams:

The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be.

The Surveillance State 0

Reg Henry knows whom to blame

The natural temptation is to blame Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush and the Congress. That is fair up to a point. But as a great Republican once said, it is a government of the people and by the people. Whether it is a government for the people is the question of the hour.

Inconveniently, we cannot view this president, his predecessor and the Congress as a breed apart from the rest of us. They are doing what most ordinary Americans wanted them to do. That’s the unfortunate truth of the matter.

The Hollow Men 0

E. J. Dionne tackles the fundamental hypocrisy of “Libertarianism.” A nugget:

From this, Mr. Lind asks another question: “If socialism is discredited by the failure of communist regimes in the real world, why isn’t libertarianism discredited by the absence of any libertarian regimes in the real world?”

The answer lies in a kind of circular logic: Libertarians can keep holding up their dream of perfection because, as a practical matter, it will never be tried in full. Even many who say they are libertarians reject the idea when it gets too close to home.

Follow the link; read the rest.

One more time:

A “Libertarian” is nothing more than a Republican who is ashamed to admit it.

My wired network has stopped working. The wireless seems fine, but the wired has gone MIA.

Today is a troubleshooting day.

I think I’ve identified the problem, but, while I am testing my way to certainty, I will be preoccupied from annoying people via the internet.

I love shooting trouble, when it belongs to someone else . . . .

I hate troubleshooting.

It’s the hunt that is annoying, because, to do it right, you have to do it one step at a time, working from macro to micro, ruling out possible causes with certainty at each step. And, with a wired network, that means juggling wires, lots of wires, often in difficult-to-access locations.

It’s simple (if you understand wires), tedious, and time-consuming. Mostly time-consuming.

Update:

A cable tester is your friend.

Update:

I have spotted the enemy and he has been routed.

Take That, Fonzie 0

One small jump for a shark, one giant leap for shark-kind.

A 300-pound, 8-foot long mako shark leaped into a boat piloted by two anglers off the New Jersey coast off Manasquan and started gobbling up anything in its path including a broomstick and cushions, according to a news report.

Being a Conservative Pundit Means Never Having To Agree with Yourself 0

George Will can’t get George Will right.

A Bunker Mentality 0

Robyn Blumner reflects on the continuing story of the Archie Bunkers.

Archie felt he knew who was changing the rules: women, minorities, hippies, homosexuals and college boys.

But the real forces that were inexorably reducing his economic prospects were imperceptible to him. The conservative political wave, from Richard Nixon on, that the flag-waving Archie fell into lock-step with was to be the undoing for people like him. Those politicians and their corporate partners would be his silent enemies, de-leveraging worker power through union-busting, unfettered outsourcing and keeping minimum wages low.

Just read it.

PATRIOT Games 0

I am shocked! shocked! at how many professional pundits, media types, and Congress critters are shocked! shocked! that the government did exactly what Congress authorized it to do under the (laughingly-named) PATRIOT Act.

This has been legislative and journalistic texting while driving.

If you don’t want someone to do something, an essential (maybe not sufficient, but essential) step is not to bleepin’ legalize it.
