Nothing To Do, No Place To Go 0

Bloomberg is all rosy about this, but, for all practical purposes, it’s status quo ante–still in mid 300K.

The number of applications for unemployment insurance payments declined by 15,000 to 330,000 in the period ended Jan. 4, the fewest since the end of November, the Labor Department reported today in Washington. Another report today showed consumers grew a bit more optimistic at the start of 2014.

(snip)

The four-week average of claims, which smoothes short-term volatility, dropped to 349,000 from 358,750.

Courtesy is essential in relationships.

Crime scene tape still surrounds the home of Laura and Chris Rains as deputies try to piece together what happened in the moments leading up to Laura’s death.

Deputies say Laura, 26, was shot in the head by her 25-year-old husband around 6 p.m. Monday.

Chris Rains told investigators his wife was handing him a pistol when it went off.

All snark aside, this sort of stuff is sad and far too common. (Don’t believe me? Set up a Google alert for “accidental shooting” and permutations thereof.)

Be polite when dining out.

John Cassata, 70, of Fairport, was showing his .38-caliber handgun to a friend, Charles Raab, 67, while sitting in the Cottage Hotel during the lunch hour on Saturday when the gun discharged, sending a bullet through Cassata’s hand, ricocheting off his leg and grazing Raab’s ankle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses said the shooting left Cassata bleeding heavily and repeating, “I have a permit. I have a permit,” referring to his pistol.

He’s been charged with reckless endangerment and other counts.

Now, about those intelligence tests for gun licenses . . . .

Travel the highway of courtesy.

The incident happened about 8 p.m. as Hector Rosina, 19, of Tampa drove north onto the interstate in a 2004 Dodge Neon at Fletcher Avenue. As he merged onto the highway, a Cadillac CTS cut him off, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Both cars continued north on I-275, the Neon in the center lane and the Cadillac in the outside lane.

As they approached Bearss Avenue, Rosina changed to the outside lane, cutting off the Cadillac, troopers said. The Cadillac then tailgated him before the cars paralleled each other.

Rosina and the other driver yelled and exchanged obscene hand gestures, troopers said. Then, the Cadillac driver fired a gun.

Tina Dupuy issues a challenge:

As the dust settles over A&E’s “Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson’s interview in GQ, I’d like to offer a challenge to all who defended his right to wax nostalgic about how happy black people were before the civil rights era (also stating that Shintoism is basically Nazism and homosexuality is basically bestiality). . . . I’d like to dare you folks to defend controversial speech that doesn’t fit your worldview.

If you really believe in free speech, if you really think it’s in danger of being abridged, if you really believe it’s an absolute right of living in a free country—then stand up for liberals who say dumb things too. Rally for Alec Baldwin. How about the governor of Louisiana spend an afternoon tweeting support for Martin Bashir’s alleged right to a basic cable show. Get some Change.org petitions going. Get these people back on TV!

(Yeah. Not gonna happen.)

Be polite to yourself.

Police say the homeowner accidentally shot himself around 6 a.m. this morning.

Police say the homeowner thought someone was breaking into his home.

He went looking for who he thought was an intruder – when his gun accidentally went off.

Republican Elephant shouting,

Addendum:

Elsewhere, Bob Cesca looks at the big picture. A nugget:

See, it’s winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and Summer in the Southern Hemisphere where in Australia, for example, they’re enduring a record-breaking heat wave. The seasons are opposite due to the natural tilt of the Earth’s axis and — well, you know. Science, science, science. But screw that mumbo-jumbo — it’s easier to look outside, see snow on the ground and then to, via confirmation bias, conclude that global warming is a hoax. Easy. And dumb.
