An Officer and a Gentleman 0

The Navy resorts to “roving patrols” to reduce sexual assaults.

The patrols, conducted each night by two-person teams, are one of numerous initiatives launched last year by the Navy to crack down on military sexual assault, following a Pentagon report last spring that estimated as many as 26,000 instances of unwanted sexual contact took place over the prior 12 months. The report, and a number of high-profile scandals, brought the issue to the fore and highlighted a culture throughout the branches that tolerated sexual assault and retaliation against service members who reported assaults.

Colbert skewers David Brooks and Ruth Marcus for their self-righteous hypocrisy on marijuana. Listen carefully as he quotes their words, which embody the hypocrisy of privilege.

It’s the Best Catch There Is 0

What Chauncey Devega said.

Right-wingers say mean, nasty, (and, unlike in this case) false and perfidious things all day, every day. Rather than apologize, they do it again, harder, harder. It’s how they roll.

Why settle for one standard, when you can have two?

We all know here that the law is the most powerful of schools for the imagination. No poet ever interpreted nature as freely as a lawyer interprets the truth.

G. Scott Davis, 35, was “messing” with a loaded handgun at his East Lampeter, Pa. apartment when his baby daughter Kestyn Davis was shot, Lancaster Online reported Monday. Police reported that Kestyn was shot in the abdomen and soon after died at a local hospital.

She was two months old.

Now, about those intelligence tests . . . .

Speaking of Vacuum Cleaners . . . 0

. . . the Zuckerborg has developed a new tactic for sucking–your personal information, that is. The “Donate” button:

Though Facebook does not earn any money from donations you make with the button — 100% goes directly to the organization you choose — the social network does reap some benefits, particularly collecting credit card numbers and other billing information that could bolster its e-commerce initiatives.

The Politics of Paranoia 0

Writing in the Roanoke Times, John Freivalds draws parallels between the NSA vacuum cleaner and the military’s attitude towards nuclear weapons in the 1950s.

What do they have in common? Paranoia.

Just read it. An excerpt won’t do it justice.

Practice highway courtesy.

“There is mention of that (type problem) on the (911–ed.) tape. I’m not sure what exactly transpired. It appears to be a random road-rage incident,” Hicks, who declined to elaborate about the 911 tape, told The Associated Press on Sunday.

No arrests have been made, and the FBI has joined the investigation.

Police believe the pickup driver rammed Davison’s car into a grassy median, before the driver or perhaps a passenger shot him at about 2:10 a.m. The shooting occurred about 10 miles north of Hagerstown, Md.

Once Again, You Can Owe Your Soul to the Company Store (Updated) 0

Dave Johnson explains “workplace loans.” A nugget:

This new loan scheme is being promoted as a “service” by unscrupulous employers working in cahoots with predatory lenders. The employee can ask for an “advance” and the loan is included right in the paycheck. These loans are great for the lender because payments come straight out of the employee’s paycheck. The loans are terrible for the employee because payments come straight out of the employee’s paycheck.

Workplace loans have very high interest rates, as much as 165% per year, and are repaid directly out of wages. So far only about 100,000 workers are being offered these scams by their companies, but at least half a dozen companies are marketing this “service” to employers.

Addendum, Later That Same Day:

Juanita Jean reports on a new twist to the scam in Texas. Not surprisingly, Rick Perry’s mitts are all over it.

Demonizing the Destitute 0

Llewellyn King, successful television producer and ex-unemployed person, explores how the “Haves” use myths of the “undeserving poor” to justify cruelty to the “Have-Nots.”

Being unemployed isn’t a vacation. It’s not a glorious excuse to watch television at home and snigger at working stiffs who get a paycheck, have savings, take vacations, hope for promotions and whose children will be able to afford to go to college.

Unemployment means cold economic fear . . . .

Click Joints (Updated) 3

Don’t believe those “Likes.”

They are more of what George Smith calls the “Culture of Lickspittle.”

. . . an Associated Press examination has found a growing global marketplace for fake clicks, which tech companies struggle to police. Online records, industry studies and interviews show companies are capitalizing on the opportunity to make millions of dollars by duping social media.

For as little as a half cent each click, websites hawk everything from LinkedIn connections to make members appear more employable to Soundcloud plays to influence record label interest.

Follow the link for more on how “social” media sites are fighting back, as well as the click-fakers’ justifications for fake clicks.
