Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

Still over 300k,
But no emergency, okay?

Jobless claims decreased by 2,000 to 326,000 in the week ended Jan. 11, the least since the end of November, from a revised 328,000 in the prior period, a Labor Department report showed today in Washington.

(snip)

The four-week average of jobless claims, a less-volatile measure than the weekly figure, declined to 335,000 from 348,500 the week before.

The number of Americans receiving extended benefits under federal programs rose by about 63,500 to 1.35 million in the period ended Dec. 28, the last week of the emergency unemployment compensation.

The Republican War on Women 0

If she’s in a nightie, he’s not responsible for what he does.

After taking a drubbing in last year’s state elections, Virginia Republicans are debating whether their party has come to be defined by its extremists. But in a congressional district in Northern Virginia, one of the state’s main instigators of culture warfare, state Sen. Richard H. “Dick” Black, is running in the Republican primary to replace longtime GOP moderate Rep. Frank Wolf. And he’s guaranteed to ignite wedge-issue passion. Exhibit A: As a state legislator, Black opposed making spousal rape a crime, citing the impossibility of convicting a husband accused of raping his wife “when they’re living together, sleeping in the same bed, she’s in a nightie, and so forth.”

No self-awareness, no self-awareness whatsoever.

More Neanderthalism (with apologies to actual Neanderthals) at the link.

Aside:

I was living in Northern Virginia when Frank Wolf started to get national attention. He was not a “GOP moderate” then.

He hasn’t changed. His party has.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” (Updated) 0

Surprised by politeness.

A loaded .45-caliber handgun was seized Monday at the Osceola County Courthouse from a man showing up for a child-custody case, Kissimmee police said. Luis A. Castillo was detained shortly after 2 p.m. when security officers spotted the weapon during an X-ray check of his briefcase, records show.

Castillo said he did not know he was armed because he recently switched briefcases.

Now that’s responsible, being polite without even realizing it.

Addendum:

PoliticalProf defines “responsible gun owner.”

Cooch’s Parting Shots 0

Always a fighter, I reckon:

During his final days as attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli released a pair of nonbinding opinions that can be read as legal arguments against Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s campaign pledges to fight for gay rights and undo abortion restrictions.

Fortunately, Governor McAuliffe seems to be choosing to disdain Cooch’s bigotry.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe signed Executive Order Number 1 at the Capitol of Virginia on Saturday, which prohibits discrimination based on race, sex, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, political affiliation, or against otherwise qualified persons with disabilities in Virginia state government. McAuliffe signed the Executive Order immediately following his inauguration.

It’s safe to say we haven’t heard the last of the Cooch and the rest of the Cuckoos.

Parent politely.

Greene County Sheriff Dan Langston said Logan Carter was shot in the head Saturday just before noon inside a home on County Road 336. He was later pronounced dead at a Paragould hospital.

Langston said Michael Carter, father of Logan, accidentally shot the boy with a .45 caliber gun purchased online about a month ago.

Misdirection Plays, The Welfare Fraud Fraud 0

In the Bangor Daily News, Ethan Strimbling crunches the numbers and finds the actual welfarm queens:

So, there you have it. Twenty-five percent of our corporate welfare programs show possible fraud of $223 million. Two tenths of a percent of our human welfare programs show possible fraud for a total of $293,000.

Yet where do Republicans focus all their energy? Well you know. The question is why? Unfortunately, the answer to that is simply pure ideology and politics.

The New Secesh: Bunker Mentality 0

Yes, it’s crazy. Crazy is dangerous.

Three men were arrested earlier this week after Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies uncovered a secret bunker hidden under a house that was filled with guns, ammunition and white supremacist paraphernalia in Littlerock, Calif., about 65 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

In addition to loads of guns, ammo, and a shooting range, there was a bunch of Nazi paraphernalia. Nevertheless, according to one of the residents, “It’s a workshop. It’s not a bomb shelter,” which leads to the question, “Just what are you working on?”

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, you can’t make this stuff up.

Charles Cummings and his son, Alex, settled into their seats at the Cobb Grove 16 Monday for the 1:20 p.m. show of Lone Survivor.

During the previews, a man sitting two seats away texted noisily on his phone. The man behind him, retired Tampa police officer Curtis Reeves, asked him to stop several times.

Reeves left for a few minutes and returned. An argument erupted. Popcorn flew. Then, authorities said, Reeves pulled out a pistol and fired at the man.

Death (yes, death) seems to me a disproportionate penalty for impolite texting.

This nation shall be smitten, and every smite will have been earned.

Contemporary Republicanism Is Not “Conservative” 0

It’s just mean for the sake of being mean.

E. J. Dionne explains:

What is the greatest fear of conservatives when they warn against the dangers of big government? It is that a leader or the coterie around him will abuse the authority of the state arbitrarily to gather yet more power, punish opponents and, in the process, harm rank-and-file citizens whose well-being matters not a whit to those who are trying to enhance their control.

This, of course, is a quite precise description of what happened when Gov. Chris Christie’s aides ordered the closure of some access lanes to the George Washington Bridge last September.

Practice random acts of politeness.

Collegedale (Tennessee–ed.) police received the call from this trailer park on Mendoza Place. A woman with non-life threatening injuries after a stray bullet entered her home.

(Snip)

“If someone was out shooting, out hunting in the Collegedale area or taking target practice we would encourage them to give us a call and let us talk to them, . . .”

I suspect that the police don’t need to wait up for that call.

A .22 calibre bullet can travel over a mile. The practitioner of politesse likely has no idea of how far the influence of his politeness may reach.
