Big Box State 0

John Romano has a realization:

Turns out, the similarities have been staring us in the face for years.

Price cuts = tax cuts.

Uninsured employees = uninsured residents.

No-frills merchandise = no-frills infrastructure.

Low wages = well, low wages.

Cheerful store greeter = Gov. Rick Scott.

It’s obvious, isn’t it? Florida is the Walmart of states.

William T. Sherman, USA:

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.

“You’re Just Trying To Make Me Feel Guilty” 2

Another View, a marvelous show on one of our local public radio stations, tackled the topic of “white privilege” on last week’s show. From the website:

The second topic in our Race: Let’s Talk About It initiative addresses the controversial issue of “white privilege” – defined as “any advantage that is unearned, exclusive and socially conferred”, according to our guest, Allan G. Johnson, author of “Privilege, Power and Difference”. On the next Another View we’ll talk about the concept of privilege, if it exists, and how it shapes our society and affects race relations. We will also hear from Carla Johnson who shares her feelings about privilege and race after research and soul searching, and Jonathan Zur, Executive Director of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities shares his perspective on how white privilege affects our youth.

Follow the link and listen.

Now.

You’ll then understand why I titled the post the way I did.

Also, mark your calendar to listen to the Friday, November 13, show. The monthly round table is always entertaining. The host skillfully gives the panelists enough leeway to speak freely without letting them get completely out of hand.

One of the topics is scheduled to be the the highly commendable revolt of the Missouri football team over unchecked racism at their campus. That episode should rip and snort in all the right places.

Aside:

When I was in elementary school, history books called 1619 the “Red Letter Year.”

Take a hike, politely.

Investigators learned the man, who was not immediately identified, had been taking a walk with his girlfriend and had returned to the east entry of Presidential Estates. He was carrying a handgun and knew he needed to dismantle it before traveling anywhere because he did not have a valid concealed pistol license.

As he reached down for the gun and was handling it, he accidentally shot himself in the leg, police say. He was treated at Metro Health Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

“Mike from Microsoft” 2

I finally got the call.

The voice said, “I’m Mike from Microsoft,” but it sounded more like Raj from Big Bang.

I said, “You’re not Mike, you’re not from Microsoft, and I don’t use Windows,” and hung up.

It would seem that battle ensign of the forces who fought to perpetuate slavery and bondage has somehow morphed into a symbol of freedom.

Freedom for whom is left unstated.

Ryan’s Derp, Both Sides Not Dept. 0

At The Nation, Eric Alterman tries to figure out why the hype about Paul Ryan and how he could possibly seen as a “compromise” House Speaker. A nuggget:

This “Ryan to the rescue” fairy tale is merely the latest manifestation of a corrupt bargain made by many members of the mainstream media. Unable to escape the intellectual straitjacket that requires them to cover the Republican Party as if its ideas are serious, they accept a false equivalence between Republican crazy-talk and normative reality.

Do please read the whole thing.

The Medicine Show 0

When you watch all those commercials for prescription medicines–the ones that tend to cluster in the early evening and instruct you to “ask your doctor about . . . “–do you ever ask why, a six months later, you start seeing commercials for law firms saying, “Did you ever use . . . ; call us now!“?

“Suffer the Children” 0

It’s not a quotation. With a Republican legislature, it’s a policy (emphasis added).

On an average day, workers move busily around the lot, fixing a steady stream of buses. Some need state-mandated preventive maintenance, required every 45 operational days. Some have basic problems, like burned-out lights; others have more serious issues, such as leaking fuel tanks or broken doors.

But bus 756 is from the late 1990s, and it’s more difficult to find new parts. So for nearly a month, it has sat in the lot.

Having vehicles out of commission, coupled with driver shortages, has made some buses late picking up students this year. It’s a situation that has angered parents, and one that school officials – in Chesapeake and elsewhere – say is tied to a precipitous drop in state aid.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

The hunt for politeness continues.

The Swift County Sheriff’s Office says 36-year-old Robert Schlieman of Detroit Lakes was shot just after noon Saturday while deer hunting north of Holloway.

Authorities say a deer ran between other hunters that Schlieman was hunting with. One of the hunters thought the deer was far enough away and started shooting at the deer.

I have nothing against hunting, at least by responsible hunters who obey the law and dine on their prey; I grew surrounded by such hunters. I must say, however, that trigger-happy hunters continually undermine their own pastime.
