You Can Vouch for It 0

A North Carolina legislator who once supported school vouchers decides that was a mistake. A snippet:

The problem is, now we have clear data that show, beyond any doubt, that these vouchers programs not only don’t help our students, they actually have worse outcomes. North Carolina is scheduled to spend over $1 billion in the next 10 years for a voucher system that simply doesn’t work. It’s time for the General Assembly to recognize this and correct course so that we can reinvest that billion dollars in public schools.

Frankly, I think “mistake” is not a correct word choice.

Vouchers originated as an strategy to divert public money into private pockets. More accurate terms, such as “con” and “scam,” spring to mind.

Mary Knowlton, 73, a former librarian at Parkview Elementary School, was participating in a two-hour training course Aug. 9, 2016, in Punta Gorda, Fla. Her trainer, Coel, was demonstrating a shoot-don’t-shoot scenario and fired what he thought were blanks at Knowlton.

The gun was loaded. Knowlton was shot and pronounced dead that night at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla.

The trainer, police officers, have been charged.

A bit of good news.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday instructed a lower court to reconsider its finding that race was not the dominant factor in drawing 11 General Assembly districts, opening the door to a new political map that could reshape the Republican-controlled state legislature.

It was a seven to one decision.

The problem is, many of the people in need of saving are in churches, and at least part of what they need saving from is the idea that God sees the world the same way they do.
