Sunday’s New York Times had another article about Facebook and its effects on the discourse. The article focused on ethnic and religious divisions in Sri Lanka and a series of hate crimes and lycnhings.

As the briefest thumbnail, the authors examine how Facebook’s algorithm, designed to promote engagement with Facebook and consequently more on-line time for users, has a side effect of promoting hate speech; the authors theorize that this is because posts that incite strong negative emotions tend to be the posts that generate the most views. )To put it another way, hate sells.) They also discuss the obstacles Sri Lankan authorities encountered in trying to get Facebook’s attention to the issue.

The article is quite long, but I think it is worth your while. An excerpt:

We came to understand that Facebook’s algorithm-driven newsfeed, by pushing out whatever content drew the most engagement from users, does more than amplify existing prejudices or boost extremists.By pushing out content charged by negative, primal emotions like anger or fear — which, studies show, perform best on the algorithm — the platform can change how people see the world and relate to one another. In countries with weak institutions but where Facebook use is widespread, that can allow misinformation to run rampant. And in societies with histories of deep social distrust, it can turn deadly.

I think that Cheryl Rofer is onto something.

The actual “Old West” lasted about two or three decades.

The “Old West” that Hollywood created never existed. It was no more real than the South of Gone with the Wind.

One must practice politeness so as to keep one’s hand in.

The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. at the Morr Indoor Range and Training Center along Willow Street in West Lampeter Township, according to township police.

“One person sustained a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the left hand. Investigation revealed the gunshot was accidental,” police said.

Not the Mainstream, Just a Pathetic Eddy Off to the Side 0

No, Kyla Mandel, Mitt Romney is not the “GOP Mainstream.” Donald Trump is.

The stream has moved far to the right as a direct result of Richard Nixon’s southern strategy, which has come full circle and consumed the party, to the extent that it doesn’t even try to pretend any more.

Those who continue to give lip service to the mythical “moderate Republican” are living in a fable of their one creation. Worse, they are perpetuating the myth to the detriment of reality.

“Dear Leader” 0

Brian Greenspun, publisher of the Las Vegas Sun, finds the fanatical loyalty of Trump supporters to be disquieting. Here’s bit of column, in which he discusses a “focus” group after George Stephanopoulos’s interview with James Comey:

The first was a discussion with a group of Trump supporters from Charleston County, S.C. Admittedly, the conversation was about Comey, his veracity, reputation and credibility, but the overarching subject matter was their belief that Trump could do no harm and has done no harm, and anyone who suggests otherwise is weak, mean, untruthful and (insert your own adjective). In other words, anything that challenges their own view of the president is, by definition, wrong.

If the other fellow had been holding his weapon, no doubt this would not have happened.

Police say the friend, who is also from French Lick, believed he heard something in the woods at the Shirley Creek campgrounds. He drew a gun and pointed it toward the trees.

The gun discharged when he attempted to holster it, with one shot striking Allbright in the back of the head.

Yet another Facebook user is surprised at how thoroughly he has been assimilated by the Zuckerborg. A snippet:

With a few clicks, I learned that about 500 advertisers — many that I had never heard of — had my contact information, which could include my email address, phone number and full name. Facebook also had my entire phone book, including the number to ring my apartment buzzer. The social network had even kept a permanent record of the roughly 100 people I had deleted from my friends list over the last 14 years, including my exes.

In a Fix 0

Trump: There's a situation I need fixed. Man: Call your fixer. Trump: My fixer's office got raided! That's why I'm in this fix! Man: Wait. Your fixer put you in a fix so now you need another fixer to fix the fix that the first fixer put you in? It's a little confusing, sir. Trump: He also put a friend at Fox in a fix. Man: (facepalm).

Politeness: It’s in the bag.

Officers found a man on the ground with an injury to his left thigh. Officers used a tourniquet to control the bleeding and he was taken to the hospital. Police said the man, from out of state, stopped at the station and opened the back hatch of his vehicle and a duffel bag fell and hit the ground. A .45 caliber handgun in the bag discharged, hitting the man in the leg.
