Empty calories, loaded guns.

Authorities report that there was a bit of rage between two cars next to each other in the drive thru and an argument eventually ensued. Once Phillip Bailey received his order he reportedly threw his smoothie at 91 year old Johnnie Douglas’ car. Douglas then responded by firing a revolver at Bailey, who was unharmed.

A Lethal Combination 0

Robert Reich considers what led to the Trumpling and concludes that there were two main ingredients in a toxic stew. Neither alone is a sufficient explanation, but which together boiled reacted like baking soda and vinegar. A snippet:

One explanation focuses on economic hardship. The working class fell for Trump’s economic populism.

A competing explanation — which got a boost this month from a study published by the National Academy of Sciences — dismisses economic hardship and blames it on whites’ fear of losing status to blacks and immigrants. They were attracted to Trump’s form of identity politics: bigotry.

(snip)

Yet the truth isn’t found in one explanation or the other. It’s in the interplay between the two.

Facebook Frolics Meets Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

USA Today staffers read every phony Russian Facebook ad. What they found should not surprise. Here’s their first paragraph:

The Russian company charged with orchestrating a wide-ranging effort to meddle in the 2016 presidential election overwhelmingly focused its barrage of social media advertising on what is arguably America’s rawest political division: race.

Trumpling sportsmanship.

The Haddonfield High School 2018 boys’ lacrosse season has come to an abrupt end as state civil rights officials look into allegations filed by Sterling High School that one of its athletes was called a racial slur during a track meet.

(snip)

The incident allegedly occurred May 1 when the Sterling and Haddon Heights girls’ track teams competed at Haddonfield in a tri-meet. A member of the Haddonfield boys’ lacrosse team allegedly told a ninth-grade competitor to “get off the track” and called the girl the N-word, according to the complaint.

I’m certain that the complaint will be found valid, because, honest to Pete, you can’t make this stuff up.

Early practice:

A man planning to do some target shooting at Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center accidentally shot himself in the leg while still in his vehicle, a range manager confirmed Friday.

Mike Brooks, outdoor education manager at the range, said a man accidentally shot himself in his upper right thigh with a 9mm handgun.

Clearly, he needs some practice . . . .

Jay Bookman marvels at the corporations who quite willingly helped fund Michael Cohen for no discernible reason. A snippet:

Pharmaceutical giant Novartis now acknowledges that it paid $1.2 million in carefully structured payments to Trump fixer Michael Cohen, allegedly for Cohen’s expertise on “U.S. health-care policy matters.”

That’s odd. Beyond financing the occasional abortion for girlfriends of GOP bigwigs, Cohen has no discernible expertise on “U.S. health-care policy matters.” Nor has he ever registered as a lobbyist. For its part, Novartis is so comfortable and proud of its just-uncovered association with Cohen and his company, Essential Consultants, that it quickly moved to distance current management from the deal.
