Quick Dial Firefox Plugin 0

Ever since the Opera browser introduced its Speed Dial over a decade ago, I’ve been a fan of “speed dials.” If you haven’t used one, a “Speed Dial” enables you to put links to favorite websites in the “new tab” page of your browser. (I stopped using Opera when it went to the Dark Side.)

For a while I used Seamonkey, because, like the old Opera, it included an email client, an RSS reader, and a newsreader. I quite like Seamonkey, but, since the Seamonkey sync is broken and I use multiple computers, I now rely on Firefox as my default browser.

I recently stumbled over a “speed dial” for Firefox called “Quick Dial” which I quite like for two primary reasons: It will sync in a normal Firefox sync without your having to create some account on somewhereyouneverheardof.com, and it allows you to select a background image from your own images library.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

The hunt for politeness goes on.

“At 5:54 pm officers responded to county road 7741 to a report of a man being shot,” said Troy Police Chief Randall Barr. “When officers arrived, they found a 61-year-old male who had been shot one time in the chest with a high-powered rifle. The initial investigation revealed that the two men were hunting together when one mistakenly identified the other as a deer.”

The jury is still out as to whether it was his antlers or his little fluffy tail that led to the mistaken identity.

Aside:

Perhaps if he had had a gun, this wouldn’t have happen–oh, wait!

Estelle Getty:

People assume that I’m wiser than I am because I’m somewhat successful. Age does not bring you wisdom, age brings you wrinkles. If you’re dumb when you’re young, you’re going to be dumb when you’re old.

Taking Inaction 0

In a longer piece about the implications of blackface and the recent revelations in Virginia, the Portland Press-Herald’s Greg Kesich makes a vital observation (emphasis added):

There’s too much debate over whether Northam or Herring is really “a racist,” but that’s where a lot of these arguments go off track. There are self-avowed racists – KKK members and neo-Nazis and others who advocate violence and terror – but there aren’t enough of them to oppress millions.

The real problem is much bigger and more complex. All of us were brought up in a racist world – not of our own making, but built on deep inequality that started with slavery and never ended. You don’t have to have hatred in your heart to perpetuate this system. You just need to pretend that you didn’t notice it.

I agree wholeheartedly with him that inaction in the face of evil is culpability.

Steeley Eyes 0

Der Spiegel digs deep into the background and contents of the Steele Dossier. A snippet:

Steele’s Russia dossier lies at the heart of the scandal. It reads today like a preview of everything that has happened since then. Many of the names that dominate the Trump-Russia affair appeared for the first time in the report, like Aras Agalarov, for example, a Russian property mogul. There’s also Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, former campaign adviser Carter Page, Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and Rosneft Chairman Igor Ivanovich Sechin. They all appear in Steele’s report — and they’ve all become important for Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Ed at Gin and Tacos argues that Donald Trump is not just unpresidential, he’s also non-presidential. A snippet (follow the link for his reasoning):

Here’s the thing: Donald Trump isn’t even trying to be president in any sense that the job of the president is understood.
