Misdirection Play, Its Not the Decay Dept. 0

At AL.com, John Archibald argues that “moral decay didn’t pull that trigger.” A nugget.

It’s not about moral decay. It’s about an obsession with the gun, the bigger, badder gun, that makes a man bigger and badder than he really is.

Moral decay is not killing us. We’ve been morally decayed forever.

Trump vs. Teleprompter 0

Will Bunch calls the play-by-play. An excerpt:

Donald Trump’s teleprompter: “We have asked the FBI to identify all further resources they need to investigate and disrupt hate crimes and domestic terrorism.” (August 5, 2019)

The Daily Beast: “The Department of Homeland Security has disbanded a group of intelligence analysts who focused on domestic terrorism, The Daily Beast has learned. Numerous current and former DHS officials say they find the development concerning, as the threat of homegrown terrorism—including white supremacist terrorism—is growing.” (April 2, 2019)

Donald Trump’s teleprompter: “We must recognize that the internet has provided a dangerous avenue to radicalize disturbed minds and perform demented acts.” (August 5, 2019)

Trump 2020 campaign ad on Facebook: “We have an INVASION! So we are BUILDING THE WALL to STOP IT. Dems will sue us. But we want a SAFE COUNTRY! It’s CRITICAL that we STOP THE INVASION.” (one of 2,000 Trump campaign Facebook ads purchased recently).

Who do you believe: the person or the machine?

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Be polite to those who deliver your furnishings.

A man from Manatee County is accused of pulling a gun on two furniture delivery men because he was unhappy that they were late. Mitchell Helton, 55, had ordered the goods from the Furniture Warehouse and had been told that they were on their way on August 3.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said that when the delivery men arrived, the front door was open and Helton told them that he was upset he had to wait so long. When they asked him if he still wanted the furniture, he said, “do whatever you want” and went to his bedroom, according to the police report.

When they started to unload the furniture from their vehicle, Helton allegedly pointed a gun at the men and said, “You know, I’ve shot people for less,” the Bradenton Herald reported.

The Dialectic of Republicanism 0

Catherine Rampell comments. A snippet:

It’s almost funny, in a twisted sort of way. Election after election, Republicans have based their core political appeal on fear.

And yet —- as dual gun massacres this weekend starkly illustrate —- they refuse to offer solutions to any of the mortal threats Americans actually face.
