Scapegoats 2

One again, as predictable as glacier melts in Antartica, gun nuts and their dupes, symps, and fellow travelers are trying to blame something other than the proliferation of guns for the proliferation of gun violence.

At Psychology Today Blogs, Bill Eddy looks to the data (not that data will sway the gun strokers from their allegiance to craving for their portable penises). A snippet:

In studies that compare the United States with other similar countries in terms of the number of mass shootings, the only major difference was not mental health, but the amount of guns.

Taking Their Cut 0

Paul Krugman points out that, when it comes to economic policy, Republican orthodoxy is clueless. A nugget:

Republican faith in the magic of tax cuts — and, correspondingly, belief that tax increases will doom the economy — is the ultimate policy zombie, a view that should have been killed by evidence decades ago but keeps shambling along, eating GOP brains.

The record is actually awesomely consistent. Bill Clinton’s tax hike didn’t cause a depression, George W. Bush’s tax cuts didn’t deliver a boom, Jerry Brown’s California tax increase wasn’t “economic suicide,” Sam Brownback’s Kansas tax-cut “experiment” (his term) was a failure.

Nevertheless, Republicans persist.

Cocoon 0

After the stripping the milkweed plant bare, the Monarch caterpillars settle down for a nap. This one chose the milkweed pot itself.

The milkweeds themselves are amazing. The caterpillars pick them bare–when they have eaten all the leaves, they start start eating the stems–and leaves come right back to feed the next brood.
