Show politeness to the children.

A bullet hole in a window at Allendale United Methodist Church is a stark reminder of a scary situation.

“Around 3:00 [Thursday], one of our teachers heard what she thought was a rock hit the window and saw broken glass,” Rev. Andy Oliver said.

That teacher quickly realized it wasn’t a rock, but a bullet that went into the preschool where 11 two-year-old kids were on hand.

Authorities have not determined whether the politeness was intentional of unintentional negligent.

Gary Abernathy looks at Donald Trump and sees a creation of “reality” TV and cable news. Methinks his argument is worth a look.

A snippet:

But as cable TV and, later, digital platforms flourished, so did the need for revenue. What became evident was that Americans would tune in to watch a good fight, which brought us “Crossfire” on CNN and countless imitators on other channels pitting left vs. right, each one louder and more aggressive than the one before. Americans were encouraged to choose sides, driving us deeper into our partisan corners.

On the entertainment side, television struck gold with “reality” programming, placing seemingly ordinary citizens in voyeuristic and titillating settings, asking viewers to cheer one contestant, jeer the other and cast their votes.

Out of this divisive and salacious swamp climbed the combative, shocking and polarizing Donald Trump, stepping onto a cultural stage constructed almost specifically for him.

Get a load of all the politeness.

A 13-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the torso by a 40-year-old man who was attempting to unload a handgun in a central Florida home.

One more time, “accidentally” is not a synonym for “negligently,” and “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron.

Leonard Pitts, Jr., finds the Republican disdain for knowledge and information to be somewhat disturbing. A nugget:

Who can forget Rick Santorum’s 2012 complaint: “President Obama once said he wants everybody in America to go to college. What a snob.”

Pass lightly — again — over the fact that Obama never said any such thing. What’s more fascinating is that Santorum — holder of an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh and a Juris Doctor from Dickinson School of Law — would identify higher education as a mark of elitism.

In a stunning act of sanity, my city has taken action against Silicon Valley’s latest pestiferous scheme.

More than a month after allowing scooters on Atlantic Avenue’s trolley lanes, the City Council backtracked on its decision, further tightening the rules on the rides.

The council voted 6-5 on Tuesday to ban them in most of the Oceanfront resort area and along streets with speed limits above 25 mph — effective immediately.

We’ll see how long sanity holds sway.

What’s a gun show for other than showing off politeness?

It happened Sunday afternoon at the Greenville Convention Center. . . .

“A witness told officers that the teenager picked the firearm up and the weapon discharged as he was handling it,” said Donnie Porter, a spokesman for the police department.

The bullet struck a gun box and came to rest inside foam within the box.

Ed Kilgore argues that, when Donald Trump talks about “disloyal Jews”–“disloyal” meaning daring to disagree with Donald Trump–he is talking to his evangelical “Christians” devotees. A snippet:

Does he really not understand the bloody history of right-wing “nationalist” and “populist” movements when it comes to Jews?

Maybe he doesn’t; for an Ivy Leaguer, the president is impressively ignorant about an awful lot of things. But it’s more likely that all his talk about the Jews is really aimed at a very different audience: his white conservative Evangelical Christian electoral base, which has its own distinctive and unsettling form of philosemitism.
