Misdirection Play, Firearms Fondlers Gun Nut Dept., Reprise 0

Leonard Pitts, Jr., comments on the Republican dance of distraction. An excerpt (emphasis added):

And people asking “Why?” and Republican officials trotting out explanations noteworthy mainly for their uselessness. They blame mental illness, Colin Kaepernick, Barack Obama, video games, drag queens, same-sex marriage, TV zombies, immigrants and recreational marijuana. Everything except the gun, everything except the fact that this is a country where the angry and disaffected can buy weapons of mass destruction more easily and with less regulation than you could buy a car.

Which suggests a cognitive bankruptcy that defies overstatement. Because while Kaepernick and Obama may be singularly American, this is hardly the only country where people play video games. It is not the only country where they watch zombies on television, suffer mental illness or use pot. It’s not even the only country where citizens keep and bear arms. But it is the only country where mass murder is routine. The only one.

Thom points out the hypocrisy of Republicans’ blaming “mental illness” for gun violence while making it easier for persons with mental issues to obtain guns.

Elie Mystal examines the “Trump Defense.”

What is the “Trump Defense,” you might ask?

“MAGA bomber” Cesar Sayoc argued that his pipe-bombing terrorism was because of messages he received from watching Fox News and listening to Donald Trump. That mitigation was rejected, and Sayoc was sentenced to 20 years. Now, Curt Brockway, who was arrested and charged for assaulting a 13-year-old and breaking his skull because the kid didn’t remove his hat during the National Anthem, is arguing that Trump’s rhetoric contributed to the assault.

Follow the link for Mystal’s thoughts on this–er–tactic.

Customer Care 0

I got a call from the “business development” arm of my hosting provider yesterday to inquire as to what needs I might have. They call about once a quarter.

After introductory pleasantries, I informed the caller that my site is not a business site, but a hobbyist site (unsaid was, “So whatever you’re selling, I ain’t buying”). He asked, “By the way, what’s the hobby?”

I said, “Running a website.”

That’s when he started laughing . . . .

(By the by, I am quite happy with my hosting provider, particularly with the tech support, which has proven extremely competent. It’s the calibre of the tech support that keeps me with them. I don’t need tech support often, because I generally know what I’m doing, but, when I do need it, I need it bad.)
