The Bully’s Pulpit 0

Paul Lewis reflects on Donald Trump’s use of “jeer pressure” and its appeal to his acolytes. A snippet:

. . . if you assume that humor in general is positive and beneficial, and if you have never watched one of Trump’s frequent rallies, then you are missing the constant laughter from the audience that signals their amusement and approval (at Trump’s frequent use of ridicule–ed.).

A Notion of Immigrants 0

A California Methodist Church wonders what might have happened had the Holy Family fled, not to Egypt, but to Donald Trump’s America. Here’s a bit from the news item:

A Methodist church in Claremont unveiled a Nativity scene Saturday night depicting Jesus, Mary and Joseph as refugees in cages, likening one of the most well-known images of the Christmas season to photos that have become synonymous with criticism of the Trump administration’s border separation policies.

The Acolytes 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Dinesh Sharma interviews Dan McAdams, author of The Strange Case of Donald J. Trump, a Psychological Reckoning. In the interview, they explore the hold that Trump seems to have over his diehard followers.

I commend it to your attention. Here’s a snippet of McAdams response to a question about whether Trump might have some form of personality disorder (emphasis added):

There is no diagnostic label that captures his unique blend of attributes and orientations. Among the most interesting features of Trump’s inimitable personality are (1) his peculiar form of extraversion-based charisma, (2) his startling lack of an animating life narrative in his own mind to make sense of who he is and how he came to be, and (3) his belief, shared unconsciously by a percentage of his supporters, that he is not “a person” – he is more than a person, like a superhero, like a primal or mythic force, but less than a person, too, in that he is not held morally accountable in the same way that other persons are.

The Seattle Times’s Naomi Ishisaka explains “the invisible wall.” A snippet:

The overall philosophy for the invisible wall is summed up well by an email reported by NBC from a Trump National Security Council official discussing asylum processing with Customs and Border Patrol.

In the email, the official said, “My mantra has persistently been presenting aliens with multiple unsolvable dilemmas to impact their calculus for choosing to make the arduous journey to begin with.”
