Another Mask Marauder 0

The stupid. It burns infects.

According to a criminal complaint, Heidi Ruth Mueller, 35, last month sought to enter a Menards home improvement store near her home in North Mankato, a city 80 miles from Minneapolis.

When Mueller attempted to walk into the business, an employee instructed her she “needs a mask to shop at the store per store policy.” Mueller then “quarreled briefly” with the worker before grabbing the man’s face and pulling his mask down.

“Like a Man Besieged” 0

SeattlePI reports on Donald Trump’s latest twitfest, in which he has attacked retired military officials and two Republican Senators for having the temerity to take issue with his (mostly) words and (few) actions (because, frankly, he doesn’t seem to do much besides tweet, watch television, and play at golf). A snippet (emphasis added):

A former Washington Republican chairman, Chris Vance, posted an astute observation on Monday: “Biden is a moderate. That’s why he’s winning. Republicans win by convincing independents that the left is dangerous — I spent decades doing that — good luck with that this year.” Vance has posted a Biden yard sign in his yard.

(snip)

Trump is blasting back like a man besieged.

(snip)

The President is slamming individuals of indisputable integrity, three of them generals who served America in wars, in contrast to a president who ducked Vietnam service with the questionable claim of bone spurs. Trump seems unable to exercise self-control, making dissenters’ words go viral, especially those in the Republican Party.

Rosa Parks:

People always said that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn’t true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day. I was not old, although some people have an image of me as being old then. I was forty-two. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.

Flag Daze 0

In Delaware, where I used to live, there is a NASCAR race track. If you ever drove by a NASCAR track on race day, you likely saw more Confederate battle ensigns than were at Gettysburg.

My brother told me–this was probably 15 years ago at time when NASCAR was trying to broaden its audience and especially attempting to attract more minorities–that my nephew had asked (I don’t remember his exact words), “How are do they expect to do that with all those Confederate flags in the parking lots?”

I guess that push has come to shove.

NASCAR has banned Confederate flags.

H/T to my brother for giving me a heads-up on this story.

“That Conversation about Race” 0

In a particularly timely post at Psychology Today Blogs, Camille S. Johnson explores why it is so difficult for some of us white folks to have that conversation about race.

I’m not going to spoil it by attempting excerpt it or summarize it. Just give it a read.

Afterthought:

I know someone who has bought into the Bill Gates theory that Thom mentions.

This person is skeptical of news that appears in our local rag, which has spent a century and a half trying (and admittedly sometimes failing) to report truth, but quickly becomes a proponent of any loony conspiracy theory posted on Youtube by random nutbags.

Yet another responsible gun owner discharges his responsibility.

A man accidentally fired his gun while trying to dismantle it and struck a woman who was three bays over at the TNT Gun and Range on Saturday afternoon in Murray.

The man, who is reported to be in his 30s, picked up his weapon ready to take it apart and the gun discharged. The bullet went through both of the woman’s legs.

The Miscount 0

The unemployment numbers that the BLS released last week were significantly lower than the actuality.

Again.

It does appear to have been an honest SNAFU, complicated by new unemployment situations resulting from layoffs and closures due to COVID-19 and stay-at-home orders. Nevertheless, the Trump administration’s (and Fox News’s) crowing about the figures released last week has been demonstrated to be wholly unwarranted.

A snippet (details of the SNAFU at the link):

The BLS admitted that some people who should have been classified as “temporarily unemployed” during the shutdown were instead misclassified as employed but “absent” from work for “other reasons.”

I find it quite credible that it was an error, rather than an intentional lie, especially as the BLS voluntarily–er–regretted the error.

We live in strange times and many persons are in unprecedented (un)employment situations.
