Rejecting Russian Impulses 0

At the Des Moines Register, a veteran who has voted Republican for the last two decades (which I suspect is entire voting career, based on the biographical bits in the article) explains why he cannot support Donald Trump. Here’s the gist; follow the link for his reasoning:

But what is so shocking about Trump’s actions is the contrast between reality and rhetoric. The president ran in 2016 on an “America first” foreign policy and continues to claim that “there’s never been a president as tough on Russia.” Yet, throughout his administration, he has continued to sacrifice American interests to maintain his fanboy relationship with Putin.

What Do You Meme by That? 0

Ella Taylor mourns the loss of nuance and deliberation. A snippet; follow the link for the rest:

America has a terrible case of the Screaming Memes. We yell past each other and bellow ill-considered thoughts into the ether, where they spread unfiltered onto our streets. To paraphrase the late, great John Prine, our heads are full of bumblebees.

I don’t agree with everything she says, but I think she makes some very good points in these times when thought seems to have been replaced by tweet nothings and thinkers by “influencers.”

The Disinformation Super Highway Goes Viral 0

Dr. Alison Eschalante discusses a study that proves that it is indeed important to consider the source. Here’s a snippet (emphasis added):

Fake news has repeatedly undermined efforts to protect Americans from the coronavirus pandemic. Now a new study finds that where people get their news determines whether they believe misinformation. Those who get their news from social media are more likely to believe falsehoods about Covid-19.

And, methinks, not just about COVID-19 . . . .

Give politeness a whirl.

The 14-year-old unidentified teen was babysitting his nephew, identified as two-year-old Romere Harris, and his one-year-old niece when the incident took place shortly before 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday. Investigation revealed the boy was twirling the gun when it discharged and struck Harris. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to injuries. The niece was not injured in the incident.

E. J. Montini notes that Donald Trump is doctor shopping again. A snippet:

In dealing with the novel coronavirus, Trump had at his disposal Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the foremost expert in the field. And, having him at his disposal, Trump disposed of him – for doing what a doctor is supposed to do. Telling the truth.

(snip)

Trump also doesn’t seem pleased with Dr. Deborah Birx, another immunologist who has offended the president by telling the truth.

The president doesn’t want truth tellers who might save lives. He wants lackeys who will save his chances at reelection.

Follow the link for a list of lackeys.
