The EFF has released a guide on how to wean yourself off Facebook entitled “How to Ditch Facebook Without Losing Your Friends.” If you’re tired of being assimilated by the Zuckerborg, you may want to check it out.

Here’s a bit from their announcement, in which they discuss the dialectic of Facebook, that is, that persons keep using it even though they’ve come to loathe it:

Both Facebook and its critics have an explanation for this seeming paradox: people use Facebook even though they don’t like it because it’s so compelling. For some critics, this is proof that Facebook has perfected an “addictive technology” with techniques like “dopamine loops.” Facebook is rather fond of this critique, as it integrates neatly with Facebook’s pitch to advertisers: “We are so good at manipulating our users that we can help you sell anything.”

We think there’s a different explanation: disgruntled Facebook users keep using the service because they don’t want to leave behind their friends, family, communities and customers.

Aside:

Yesterday, I was on the phone with a representative of a local service company arranging for a routine service call. Somehow, the small talk turned to “social” media. The person on the other end of the line said (I’m paraphrasing here), “I canceled my Facebook account. I was afraid that I would feel less connected, but actually I feel more connected . . . .”

Read about the Stanford Prison Study and consider, does it remind you of any dynamic in our recent news? (The link I posted is to an article at the Britannica; a web search will turn up many more references.)

I would argue that it exemplifies why the Founders placed a high value on “checks and balances” in governance and why it is important to respect the rights of the disadvantaged on par with the rights of the advantaged.

One more time, “accidental” and “negligent” are not synonyms.

And our police and media must stop pretending that they are.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

At my local rag, Margaret Edds discusses Virginia Governor Trumpkin’s apparent reluctance to allow schools to teach history that actually happened. Here’s a tiny bit of her article:

Still unfulfilled, however, is Youngkin’s history pledge. With a once-in-seven-years review of Virginia history standards due for completion in November, an opening has arrived. Yet, the recent decision by a Board of Education flush with new Youngkin appointees to delay public hearings on draft standards raises alarm. So does the Youngkins’ dropping from tours of the governor’s mansion — at least for now — a deeply researched narrative about the enslaved people who once lived and worked there.

Such developments must not signal a retreat from a long-overdue, more truthful telling of Virginia history.

Afterthought:

She says “they must not,” but I got a dollar to a doughnut that they do, at least as long as the party of the New Secesh holds power.
