Denial Is Not Just a River in Egypt 0

F. T. Rea is taken aback by aghast at Republicans who would assert that history isn’t.

Here’s a bit from his post:

To be a Republican history rewriter in good standing one must claim to believe that it’s best to ban books that present text and images that accurately portray American history, to do with slavery, the Civil War, the Jim Crow Era, the Civil Rights Era, etc.

Another “responsible gun owner” shoots first, gets questioned later.

Upon investigating the incident, detectives say that several juveniles were playing hide and seek in the area and were hiding on the neighbor’s property.

Detectives spoke to David V. Doyle, the owner of the property. The 58-year-old told authorities that he saw shadows outside his home, went inside and got his firearm.

Detectives say Doyle told them that when he went back outside he saw people running away from his property and began shooting at them, unknowingly (!!!!–ed.) hitting the girl.

We are a society of stupid.

Plunkitt of Tammany Hall.

It’s a short read, but a valuable one. It’s historical American realpolitik. I read it many years ago for one of my classes when I was training as an historian.

Michael in Norfolk sees through the sham. Here’s a bit of his post:

. . . I long a go came to the conclusion that there is nothing Christian in the true sense about these people. Yes, there is lots of feigned piety and wearing of religion on one’s sleeve and self-labeling as “Christian”, but when it comes to witnessing Christ’s message of love, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, it simply is nowhere to be seen. Instead, there are daily displays of hatred towards others, overt racism by I would argue the vast majority of evangelicals, and the constant dehumanizing of anyone who does not adhere to a religion that boils down to a cherry picked selection of Old Testament passages with no concern for the New Testament message.

Once again, a “responsible gun owner” proves that said phrase is an oxymoron.

In a post related to this topic, Grung_e_Gene argues most cynically that Republicans have no interest in stemming the flow of blood. One dares to hope that he is, as my old boss used say, in error.

Aside:

Recently, on an episode of the Bob Cesca Show–I can’t remember just which one–Buzz Burbank said that skepticism is good and cynicism, well, not so much. I’m not sure I buy all of Gene’s reasoning, but, sometimes, cynicism does seem to be called for.

When Fomentation Comes to a Head . . . . 0

The Seattle Times’s Danny Westneat looks at the recent sedition trials of Jan. 6th defendants.

His observations are disquieting. Here are a couple of snippets; follow the link for context.

The verdicts ought to put to rest the Republican historical revisionism that Jan. 6 was simply a protest or legitimate political discourse. Three different juries have now handed to sedition-related verdicts to 14 people . . . .

(snip)

To this day, thought, these . . . beliefs are an animating core of the Republican Party. They are the war cry for the current front-runner for the party’s nomination for president.

And again:

According to officers, a 54-year-old man from Fishers was turkey hunting when he misidentified two other hunters.

Jeffery McClintic, 31 of Indianapolis, and Scott Poynter, 34, of Danville received non-life threatening injuries when the man shot in their direction, officers said.

This may come as a surprise to oxymoronic “responsible gun owners,” but turkeys and humans do not look alike.

David talks with the person who debunked Mike Lindell’s bunk, a person who, I would note, considers himself a Republican.

It’s an interesting discussion and an example of something we hear too seldom: civil discourse between persons of differing political positions.
