Where There’s Fire, There’s Smoke 0

Many of the northeastern and mid-Atlantic states have been under air quality warnings because of smoke from wildfires in Quebec. Yesterday, we could smell the smoke and see the haze, though we are hundreds of miles south of the Canadian border (today, the air is clearer, but the warnings are still in effect). This is unprecedented in my experience, and I’ve lived in this general area my entire life.

Yet, as Michael in Norfolk points out, Republicans continue to pretend that climate change isn’t.

The EFF reports on a court’s finding about farcical recognition. A snippet (emphasis added):

In a victory for transparency in police use of facial recognition, a New Jersey appellate court today ruled that state prosecutors—who charged a man for armed robbery after the technology showed he was a “possible match” for the suspect—must turn over to the defendant detailed information about the face scanning software used, including how it works, source code, and its error rate.

Methinks one of the most striking characteristics of “Tech Bros”–and I’m referring specifically to that particular subset of the tech community–is their arrogance.

Scene: The Lib Owners Podcast. Man ONe: Welcome back to the Lib Owners--the podcast that always owns the Libs. Man Two: It's what we do. Man One: Okay, let's talk about cancel culture. Can you believer the way those woke social justice warriors insist on safe spaces where they won't be challenged in any way? Man Two: It's truly a threat to free discourse upon which our great nation thrives. But, before we get into that conversation, I just want to say how disgusted I am with Target for having LBGTQ merchandise on display. Man One; Yikes! The stuff with all the rainbows? Where children can see it? Sounds like boycott time to me. Man Two: And of course Disney has gone full woke. Now DeSantis says they're nothing but corporate groomers. Man One: That's disgusting. I certainly won't be going to any of their popular movies or theme parks any more. Man Two: And--Chick-Fil-A--the fast food chain supposedly run by good conservative Christians--has a vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Man One: The Lord's chicken has becom the woke chicken? Well, add another boycott to the list. Anyway, what were you saying about cancel culture? Man Two: Oh. I'm appalled by these snowflakes who want to ban anything that might offend their delicate sensibilities. Man One: Have you heard of free speech, the founding principle of our republic? Coming up next; More states outlaw drag shows. Man Two: Ha ha! Take that, you weirdo liberals!

Artificial? Yes. Intelligent? Not So Much. 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Peter Gärdenfors points out that (emphasis added)

Artificial intelligence (AI) has undoubtedly made remarkable progress in recent years, demonstrating its ability to process vast amounts of data and perform complex tasks. However, it is crucial to recognize that AI lacks a fundamental quality that humans possess: judgment.
