Artificial? Yes. Intelligent? Not So Much. 0

Bruce Schneier asks whether “we really want to entrust this revolutionary technology (AI–ed.) solely to a small group of US tech companies?”

He goes on to remind us that

Silicon Valley has produced no small number of moral disappointments. Google retired its “don’t be evil” pledge before firing its star ethicist. Self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist” Elon Musk bought Twitter in order to censor political speech, retaliate against journalists, and ease access to the platform for Russian and Chinese propagandists. Facebook lied about how it enabled Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and paid a public relations firm to blame Google and George Soros instead.

Living the dream, the NRA way (full dreamscape at the link):

The man, identified as Mark Dicara of Lake Barrington, used a .357 Magnum revolver that he owned to fire the shot at around 9:50 p.m. on April 10, the Lake County government said in a news release issued on Tuesday. According to Lake County sheriff’s deputies, on the night of the incident Dicara dreamed someone was breaking into his home, and retrieved the gun to shoot at whomever he believed was the “intruder.”

But, when he fired the revolver, Dicara shot himself in the leg instead and woke from the dream, a subsequent investigation found. Authorities also confirmed during the probe that an attempted burglary did not happen at Dicara’s residence, and there was no intruder on his property.

Every day, in every way, our society is getting stupider.

If One Standard Is Good, Two Must Be Better 0

Michael Paul Williams finds himself dismayed at the willingness of the self-styled “law and order” party to look the other way when the (most credibly) accused is Donald Trump. A tiny bit from his article (emphasis added):

It is a sad day for our country when an entire political party remains in thrall to a man intent on crashing America’s venerable institutions into a cliff. And it is a dreadful day when lawmakers, who should know better, argue that Trump should somehow be above the law because he is running for president.

The entire piece is worth your while.

Elon Musk apparently has the courage of his evictions.

A Boulder landlord succeeded in obtaining an order to evict Twitter over unpaid rent, according to recent court documents.

Gutting Out the Vote 0

The editorial board of The Charlotte Observer dissects North Carolina’s Republicans’ plan to take over everything. A snippet:

These days Republican legislative leaders don’t believe in the idea of three equal branches providing checks and balances on each other. Instead they want one dominant branch of government – the legislative – with the executive branch limited to carrying out the legislature’s orders and the judicial branch there to say whatever the legislature does is OK.

Indictment Incitement? 0

Robert Reich looks at the possible reactions to Donald Trump’s indictment and finds a cause for a bit of optimism. Here’s a bit of what he has to say (emphasis in the original):

Violence is possible, but there will be no civil war.

Nations don’t go to war over whether they like or hate specific leaders. They go to war over the ideologies, religions, racism, social classes, and/or economic policies these leaders represent.

But Trump represents nothing other than his own grievance with a system that refused him a second term and is now beginning to hold him accountable for violating the law.The

A Quibble:

It seems to me that Trump has tapped into at least two of five potential causes that Reich listed.

The possibility that empathy resides in parts of the brain so ancient that we share them with rats should give pause to anyone comparing politicians with those poor, underestimated creatures.
