The Time Machine 0

John Young, discussing the recent Supreme Supremacist Court ruling in Moore v. Harper, argues that MAGA Republicans and their sponsors (might one call them “groomers”?), such as the Federalist Society, want to roll back the clock by packing the Court with their dupes, symps, and fellow-travelers.

Here’s a bit of his article:

And so, in a right-wing laboratory, rows of judge-robots were programmed:

“I will destroy democracy.”

“I will destroy democracy.”

“I will destroy democracy.”

MAGA true believers will say this is not the intention of their chosen jurists. They mean only to return the workings of our democracy back to the way they were in the — uh, oh, what the heck — 18th century.

Before the invention of flush toilets. When slaves, not electricity, powered the economy. When only property owners, White ones, ran the place.

Hypatia:

In fact men will fight for a superstition quite as quickly as for a living truth – often more so, since a superstition is so intangible you cannot get at it to refute it, but truth is a point of view, and so is changeable.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Yet another responsible gun owner exposes her family to politeness.

The report quotes one of the neighbors as saying

“My big message for parents out here: monitor your kids. Please monitor your kids,” said Sherrie Richardson.

As far as I am concerned, it would be better that the guns weren’t there in the first place than to have to “monitor the kids.”

Bob: So, what's your beef with advancements in technology? Joe: It's leading to a loss of skills. Bob: OK, for example? Joe, to Alexa: Alexa, what new book do you recommend? Alexa: Sure . . . Mark Twain just wrote a new book. Would you like me to put it in your cart? Joe, to Alexa: Uh . . . you know he's been dead for over 100 years. Alexa: Not an issue, thanks to A. I. Now we scan all his writings, then our algorithms create all-new works. Joe: That's manufacturing, Alexa, not creating. ALexa: Whatever. How about a new painting by Van Gogh? Bob: OK . . . point sadly made.

Michael in Norfolk connects the dots. A snippet:

In their quest to erase “divisive topics” from public education – namely accurate black history, LGBT individuals and non-Christian faiths – both Florida’s Ron DeSantis and Virginia’s Glenn Youngkin are striving to pander to and endear themselves to white Christian nationalists who want America to be a quasi-theocracy with themselves dictating acceptable beliefs and a sanitized version of history that omits the sins and horrors perpetrated by whites of previous generations.

At Psychology Today Blogs, Elliot D. Cohen takes a look at the likely effects of the recent spate of anti-LGBTQ legislation in Republican-controlled states. His conclusions are disturbing.

He makes three main points:

  • LGBTQ youth are twice as likely to entertain and attempt suicide as all other adolescents.
  • LGBTQ-based discrimination is a major risk factor for poor mental health and suicidality in LGBTQ youth.
  • Legislation that discriminates against LGBTQ people increases the likelihood of suicidality among LGBTQ youth.

An Unintentional Truth 2

The editorial board of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch found itself somewhat taken aback by the statements of Florida Governor DeSantis defending chattel slavery. Here’s a little bit from their editorial:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is defending and doubling down upon new state teaching standards that claim American slavery had a silver lining in that it taught enslaved people useful skills.

What’s next? Suggesting that the Nazis’ horrendous wartime experiments on Jews weren’t entirely evil, because they yielded medical data?

Little did they expect that what they intended, in my opinion, as rhetorical hyperbole for emphasis would, within a matter of days, become a prophecy come true.
