Once again, a child plays with politeness.

Police believe that a 4-year-old child, who was in the backseat of the car, somehow found a loaded firearm and accidentally fired the weapon, striking a 2-year-old child, who was also in the backseat.

Two North Carolina state senators are–er–concerned about the direction of the North Carolina Republican Party. Here’s a bit of what they have to say:

But it is becoming increasingly clear that Republicans in the North Carolina General Assembly are putting their own thirst for power ahead of American ideals.

Follow the link for their reasoning and, remember, what they have to say is apparent in a number of other states too.

Psychology professor Gail K. Sahar explores some of the reasons for increasing political polarization in dis coarse discourse. I recommend her article as a worthwhile read in these fractious times. Here’s a bit:

Further, once one comes to identify with one party or ideology, there is no shortage of ways for people to convince themselves that their position is correct. Social psychologists who study biases in the way we think about the social world have demonstrated time and again that we are not unbiased processors of information. In fact, we choose to pay attention to information that supports what we already believe, which is known as the confirmation bias. An example of this tendency would be to only read articles that agree with one’s position or to only watch the news channel that shares their political perspective.

Glyn Daniel:

We know only too well that all over the world, from wayward undergraduate to B. B. C. producer to publisher’s reader there are people, otherwise sensible and sane, people who would not believe in six-headed cats and blood-curdling spectral monsters, who yet read some folly about Noah’s ark or Atlantis or cataclysmic world-tides, and say, with a contented sigh, “There may be something in it, you know.”

Honoring Motherhood, the U. S. A. Way 0

By the end of the month, two Alabama hospitals will stop delivering babies. A third will follow suit a few weeks later.

That will leave two counties — Shelby and Monroe — without any birthing hospitals, and strip a predominantly Black neighborhood in Birmingham of a sought-after maternity unit.

(snip)

The closures come as the need for obstetrics care in Alabama is anticipated to rise as a result of its abortion laws. The state has banned almost all abortions since June 2022.

The report points our that Alabama is not the only state where this is happening.

Spoiling the System 0

Lindsay M. Chervinsky looks at Donald Trump’s plans to effectively destroy the civil service and replace career civil servants with his dupes, symps, and fellow travelers.

This plan would reproduce the spoils system’s worst corruption, grift, and inefficiencies. The spoils system is the colloquial term for the period from roughly 1828 to 1883 when political appointees were doled out government positions in return for their vote and political loyalty. To the victory of the presidential election went the extensive and lucrative “spoils.” Under the spoils system, most federal positions were political appointees, from post office managers to customs house collectors to clerks in the executive departments. Party bosses granted these positions as rewards to loyal operatives and used them as cudgels to force supporters to toe the party line.

Peter Smagorinsky, emeritus professor at the University of Georgia, points out that not only can it happen here, it is happening here. Here’s just one of the examples he cites:

Florida is perhaps the nexus of selective, distorted history. The state is using materials provided by PragerU, which is not a university. It is headed by radio personality Dennis Prager, who says, “We are in the mind-changing business. …

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

Thom points out that Republicans’ efforts to gut out the vote are rooted in racism.

I’m a Southern Boy. I grew up under Jim Crow and went to segregated schools.

I was there when the first few black students (one the first year, eleven the next year) integrated my formally all-white high school. I was there when I found out that they were people just like me. I was there when one of my white (natch) teachers was horrified that my local paper had switched my name with that of one of my black classmates in a picture of the track team. (As an aside, I didn’t care a bit because he was a good guy. Plus I wasn’t very good at track, though track was good for me, but I was a great scorekeeper.)

I know racism when I see it.

Richard Nixon’s southern strategy has come full circle.

Today’s Republican Party is the party or racism.

It has no ideas.

Racism is all it’s got.
