Stray Question 2

When did “who has the ugliest grill/front end?” become the standard against which automobile designers measure themselves?

The explanation I’ve heard often is the giant grills (on Genesis, BMW, Cadillac Escalade/Tahoe, etc) are a direct response to the Chinese Market. But, this has been discussed and debated for a decade now and doesn’t seem to be true? BMW’s is really ugly, but the Hyundai/Genesis things actually looks okay though it isn’t my taste.

The proximate cause of my musing was some Ford pick-up with a hideous egg-crate grill.

I tend to agree about BMWs. Late-model Jaguars, though, aren’t too bad. One of my neighbors has one.

I’m not saying all late-model cars are ugly, but , but, honest to Pete, so many of them are. And a lot of the parking/running light arrangements are just–er–irritating.
