“Descended from a Long Line that Somebody Fell For” 0

Badtux debunks the myth of the “thin blue line.” Here’s a bit of his article:

In short, cops aren’t holding the “thin blue line” between civilization and anarchy. They’re taking care of a relatively few criminals who want to hurt other people. There could be civilization without cops — in fact, there was civilization for tens of thousands of years without cops, modern police forces don’t arrive in history until the 1830’s, less than 200 years ago . . . .

Will Bunch has a theory as to why Donald Trump has deployed his secret(ive) police in Portland, Oregon. Here’s the gist; follow the link for the complete article, which is well worth your while (emphasis added):

For now, though, Trump’s 21st century fascism is mostly a political performance. Unable to run on his leadership or his record, with a mounting coronavirus death toll that just passed 140,000 and 11 percent unemployment that may get worse again before it gets better, the president is hoping to save his presidency with fear. But his desperate and misguided efforts to recreate Richard Nixon’s 1968 “law and order” campaign and somehow scare voters about Joe Biden won’t work unless he can bring nightly scenes of disorder and chaos into your living room.

While on the subject, PoliticalProf has a thought.

Secret(ive) Police 0

Earlier this week I saw a report asserting that the Trump administration was, for all intents and purposes, deploying a force of what the commentator referred to as “brown shirts” in Portland, Oregon.

I chose to view it with several grains of salt, thinking it might be a little over the top.

I’m beginning to think that perhaps I dismissed it too cavalierly.

At the Des Moines Register, Reka Basu recounts tales of the enforcers. Here’s a tiny bit:

“Nobody was doing anything remotely provocative,” said Ahlgren (who was present as a “protest medic”–ed.), who moves around the country as a political organizer. “I was running and treating people. According to my Fitbit, I was running 45 minutes. People were hit by mace gel. It’s the worst. It permeates fabric and has a more lasting effect. It’s a thicker consistency and stings the skin more, and can cause burns and blistering.”

Ahlgren’s own injuries still had him in a knee brace five days later: He twisted an ankle and burst veins in his shins and right palm from falling onto concrete. . . .

“The cops were showing no mercy. They were literally chasing us on foot,” he said. “A few of us fell, and they (police) started yelling, ‘You bastards better run or you’ll get it worse!’”

Asked why he thinks he was spared arrest, Ahlgren said simply: “I’m white.”

Just read it. I guarantee it will ruin your evening.

“Bad Apples” 0

Writing at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Elijah Todd-Walden finds that the “few bad apples” notion regarding rogue cops is of little comfort. A snippet:

Time and time again, those “bad apples” have been granted impunity to continue to tarnish the name of the police and taint the trust of the community, especially with black and brown Americans. Derek Chauvin had 18 complaints filed against him before he killed George Floyd, only two of which were closed “with discipline.”

Perhaps the most apt comment I’ve heard about “the few bad apples on the police force” theory of police brutality came in a recent episode of The Bob Cesca Show (I can’t remember precisely which one).

Suppose, asked one of the participants, that, after a pilot flew an airliner into the side of a mountain, the airline announced that it was just one of a few bad apples among its crews?
