Decoding de Code 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Ravi Chandra offers some guidelines for recognizing mis- and disinformation is dis coarse discourse. Here’s a couple that seem particularly pertinent; follow the link for the complete list.

      7. Are they primarily out to benefit themselves?

      8. If you think they are trying to primarily benefit themselves or a particular demographic or socioeconomic group or faction, what risk do they pose to those outside their group or faction?

Stray Thought, Still Rising Again after All These Years Dept. 0

The legacy of Richard Nixon’s odious southern strategy lives on.

In our politics, we no longer have a left-wing, a middle-of-the-road center, and a right-wing.

We have a slightly-left-of-center-wing, a characterless mush-in-the-middle that believes in nothing other than that in between is the place to be, and an unabashedly white-wing that wants to turn the clock back 160 years.

Debunking de Bunk 0

Robert Reich debunks the de bunk that Trump’s dupes, symps, and fellow travelers are telling themselves (and others).

He addresses five specific lines of bunkum. Here’s a bit from one entry (emphasis in the original); follow the link for the rest.

4. Trump has received preferential treatment because of who he is.

Trump’s defenders complain about a two-tiered justice system.

They’re right about that, but not in the way they claim. Trump has been given special privileges most criminal defendants would never get.

Reich goes on to remind us that

The principle that no one is above the law is only true if we make it so.

Just Another Day at the Office 0

Mark Meadows attempts to wiggle out of the Georgia indictment by claiming that conspiring to undermine an election was just another day in the life, at least for a Trump toady. Here’s a bit from the report at Above the Law:

Unlike his former boss, who spent the past week screeching into the ether about “PHONEY FANI WILLIS,” and the “perfect perfect phone call,” Meadows and his lawyers immediately sprung into action. Within 24 hours, they filed a motion to remove the case to federal court, alleging that the conduct at issue was part of his official government duties.

The Transmogrification 0

Dick Polman marvels at the state of today’s Republican Cult of Trump Party. A snippet; follow the link for the rest.

The party that used to pride itself for being tough on crime indulges a criminal defendant in its midst. The party that used to pride itself for being tough on national security has uttered nary a peep about Trump’s latest suckup to Vladimir Putin: “I was the apple of his eye.” Presidential candidates like Ron DeSantis and Tim Scott are debasing themselves by defending Trump; Scott says the Trump criminal probes are “un-American and unacceptable.”

Devolution 0

Writing at the Hartford Courant, David Holahan finds himself dismayed by flood of lies in dis coarse discourse and by those who would dismiss justify them as somehow being “free speech.” Here’s a bit of his article (emphasis added):

We are enduring a prevarication pandemic of late. Pettifoggers for perfidious pols are telling us that lies are nothing more or less than good old fashioned made-in-America free speech, our great gift to global governance.

(snip)

America has devolved from the home of self-evident truths to the land of felonious falsehoods.
