Joel Mathis is bemused by Republicans’ over-the top response to last week’s Chinese balloon.

The now-notorious Chinese balloon appeared in the skies over the region last week, floating peacefully through the area before the Air Force shot it down off the coast of South Carolina. To listen to our leaders, though, you’d have thought the sky was falling.

The Dividing Line 0

The editorial board of the Las Vegas Sun looks at Sara Huckabee Sanders’s “response” to President Biden’s State of the Union address and suggests that she got part of it right. A snippet:

. . . Huckabee Sanders delivered the Republican rebuttal, declaring that “the dividing line in America is no longer between right or left.?The choice is between normal or crazy.”

We agree. Though we also think she missed a few adjectives, like dangerous, ignorant, racist, unconstitutional and un-American. The past president’s apologist also needs to take a good long look in the mirror before she starts decrying crazies.

Metastatic Malignancy 0

Robert Reich has qualms about Facebook’s Meta’s and Twitter’s decisions to allow Trump back on their platforms. A snippet; follow the link for the rest of his thoughts on this matter.

“The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying — the good, the bad and the ugly — so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box,” wrote Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs and the U.K.’s former deputy prime minister, in a blog post announcing the decision.

With due respect to Nick Clegg, this is rubbish. Trump is far worse than an ugly politician. He’s a dangerous traitor to American democracy.

Incongruously Assembled 0

In response to a letter to the editor of the Las Vegas Sun, I regret to have to say that I think that we do have a truly representative House of Representatives.

The Republican majority truly represents the worst in us.

I’m going to blame some of this on the the Chicago School and their economics of me! Me! ME! (which, natch, they dressed up in multi-syllabic words), which portrays rank selfishness as a positive value, for helping mainstream this malignancy.

But that’s just me.

Unabashed moral bankruptcy is now the quickest path to success—starting with many of the key GOP figures in Congress, . . . .

Dis Coarse Discourse 0

Writing at Psychology Today Blogs, Charles Harper Webb, dismayed by dis coarse discourse, points out that an “argument doesn’t have to be a fight.” An excerpt (emphasis added):

Democracy depends on honorable argument. In theory, citizens argue issues, then vote, trusting the wisdom of the many. Yet this process only works well when the goal of the argument is not to win but to arrive at the best result for all concerned. This notion seems naïve today. The “loyal opposition” has become the “vengeful enemy,” plotting to grab the upper hand and make heads roll. Friendships are scuttled, families fractured, and marriages are blown up by scorched-earth arguments–and not just about politics.

Methinks this to be a timely read.
