Words Matter 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Joe Pierre argues forcefully that violent political rhetoric leads (or, perhaps more accurately, has already led) to actual violence.

He also notes a double standard in dis coarse discourse:

Indeed, a kind of double standard seems to have crept into American politics. While President Obama drew widespread criticism for wearing a tan suit back in 2014 and Clinton faced a serious backlash for her “basket of deplorables” gaffe* during her 2016 campaign, violent political rhetoric—mostly coming from the right—is often either trivialized and written off as harmless metaphor or countered with “whataboutism,” . . . .

Goat to Rat: You and me are so far apart politically, but what's overlooked is the goals we have in common. For example, I think we all agree it doesn't do any of us any good to be misinformed. Rat: I like being misinformed. Goat: We may be further apart than I thought. Rat: Booooooo, truth.

The Plane Truth 0

Sam and his crew discuss Republicans’ plan to condemn old persons to penury gut social security.

Aside:

I know more than one person whose only income is social security. If Republicans take that away, they will have nothing.

Then will come Republicans complaining about the growth in the homeless population.

Oh, yeah, I understand that, if you want to meet a Republican, just hang out at the intersection of Greed and Cruelty. You won’t have a long wait.

Both Sides Don’t 0

Michael in Norfolk calls out the cowardly bothsiderism of our political–er–journalists. A snippet (emphasis added):

For years too many journalists and news outlets have engaged in spreading false equivalency between GOP lies and Democrat positions and policies. Most seem too afraid of being called “partisan” even when reporting the truth and objective facts and statistics.

Mangy comments at the Youtube page:

Most of the reasons Trumpers give for admiring Trump are not based in reality. Despite what they may WANT to believe about Trump, he is not courageous and brave, he doesn’t care about the average person, he isn’t knowledgeable about the world, he is more a failure in business than a success, he was not in the top of his class in university, he does not know more than. the average person, and he is not motivated by any Christian principles. He IS what most would call a charlatan, a fake, a poser, a phony, a pretender, a BS’er, or a scam artist. This song tries to set the record straight for the benefit of those who are too blind to see what is right in front of their eyes in regards to Cheeto Jesus.

Dis Coarse Discourse 0

At the Charlotte Observer, Alexis Giachetti offers three very simple pointers to avoid being fooled on the disinformation superhighway. In these days of fertile fabricators and loquacious liars, they are well worth your attention.

Here they are; follow the link for more details about each one:

  • Verify before you share
  • Watch out for red flags
  • Learn to identify credible information

And remember, “social” media isn’t. And what it most isn’t is a reliable source of news.
