The Authoritarian Appeal, Reprise 0

Uriel Abulof, like Daniel F. Seidman whom I mentioned yesterday, is exploring the appeal of authoritarianism.

In Part 2 of two-part series (Part 1 is linked at the link), he makes three main points:

  • Some leaders are like toxic therapists: By displaying both power and victimhood, they abuse people’s fears and frustrations.
  • People tend to project their pains onto their leader’s wounds and introject the leader’s strength to seek revenge and redemption.
  • Some Americans feel like victims, a sensation that may be driven by narcissism and manipulation.

Follow the link for a detailed discussion of each.

As someone who smoked cigarettes for a number of years, I can attest that cigarettes are not a positive factor and that nicotine is not a good thing.

A Self-Inflicted Injury 2

F. T. Rea points fingers. A snippet:

Moreover, two groups, in particular, must bear much of the responsibility for Trump’s 2016 win and thus today’s decision that struck down Roe vs. Wade: 1. Republicans who were semi-revolted by Trump. Still, by habit, just couldn’t vote for a Democrat. 2. Democrats, who, because they were bored with politics and/or they found Clinton too annoying, simply didn’t vote, again.

Methinks he has a point.

The lesser of two evils is always preferable to the evil of two lessers.

“The Doom and Gloom Scroll” 0

Sam and his guest* find American media’s coverage of the January 6 hearings to be somewhat problematic, especially when compared to that of the European press. They wonder whether this news of what was nothing less than an attempted coup d’etat is getting lost in a “daily doom and gloom scroll.”

Afterthought:

Me, I think Putin sees himself more as Peter than as Joe.

I also think he expected the people of Ukraine to welcome him, not to resist him.

He was wrong on both counts.

The Roll-Back 0

Gordon Weil espies a disturbing trend. Here’s the nub of his article (emphasis added):

But a divide has begun to emerge between them (the two major American political parties–ed.) with some Republicans believing that their party should reverse the trend toward greater democracy. Voter suppression and misusing Senate voting practices have become part of the GOP agenda.

Follow the link for his reasoning.

In a related vein, Professor Richard Cherwitz reminds us that, “once democracy is gone, it’s gone.”

“A Republic, If You Can Keep It” 0

At The Denver Post, Air Force Major General (ret.) Irv Halter points out that “it’s not the economy, stupid.” Here’s a bit from his article (emphasis added):

We’re Americans. We do not swear an oath to a leader or to a political party. We are a nation of laws and owe allegiance to the Constitution alone. We have fought for it, died for it. When the Constitution is subverted, the danger to our Republic reaches far beyond our disagreements about politics and culture. Within it, we can accomplish anything, debate anything, fix anything. Outside of it, the American enterprise dies.

What happened leading up to Jan. 6, 2021, was an organized attack on our founding document and nation. Despite overwhelming evidence, people who should have been saying “no” to the lie and the liar, instead marched in lockstep behind him.
