The Man Who Would Be King 0

Michael in Norfolk nails it. A snippet:

Indeed, the Felon appears increasingly detached from objective reality and seeming views himself as a monarch . . . .

Behind That Curtain* 0

David notes that, thanks to Elon Musk’s new feature on Xitter (a feature which I suspect Musk now regrets), a number of MAGA “influencers” have been revealed to be–er–less than veracious (but most definitely voracious). (And this surprises you how?)

One more time, “social” media isn’t.

American Stasi 0

Via the Las Vegas Sun, law professor Noah Feldman explores why ICE is being allowed to run rampant over the legal rights of immigrants–properly documented or not–and American citizens.

He is somewhat less than sanguine. Here’s a snippet:

. . . the ICE problem forces us to acknowledge the limits of our legal and political systems. Our norms and expectations are being shattered by an overreaching executive. So far, the judiciary isn’t coming to the rescue, and the legislative branch seems not to care.

I commend the piece to your attention.

Short Attention Span Theatrics 0

We keep hearing claims that each new stunt by the Trump maladministration is a “distraction” to make us forget the last stunt.

I don’t buy it, that is, I don’t buy that a worst thing is a good strategy to take attention from a worse thing to take attention from a bad thing and so on. Rather, I think that it’s a collection of lots of bad things happening at the same time, so many bad things it boggles the mind. To quote Steve M.,

So what appear to be distractions are just evidence that the zealots, and their semi-informed leader, are in a hurry to remake the world in their image.

“History Does Not Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes”* 0

At the Idaho State Journal, Kim Shinkoskey considers the subservience of today’s Republican Party to their Dear Leader and hears a rhyme from over a century ago. Here’s a couplet:

Republicans today are acting more like the communists of Vladimir Lenin’s Bolshevik party. They are criminalizing dissent when their leader says Democrats and contrary judges belong in jail, just like Bolsheviks criminalized the Menshevik opposition.

The Rule of Lawless 0

Michael in Norfolk explains why Donald Trump accused six Congresspersons, all of whom have distinguished records of serving in the military or intelligence ranks, of sedition for reminding military personnel that they need not obey illegal orders.

It’s quite simple, really:

Indeed, in the disturbed mind of America’s would be dictator, anything he orders is “legal” because the monarch has commanded it.

All the News that Fits 0

Michael in Norfolk bemoans the false equivalence in dis coarse discourse. A snippet:

. . . the Felon too often is depicted as “another politician” when in reality no president, even Richard Nixon, ever engaged in such unlawful and abnormal conduct.

A Notion of Immigrants 0

Farron points out that Donald Trump has been quite happy to hire immigrants to work at his resorts even as he has derided them to attract support from racists and bigots (my words, not Farron’s).
