Icing the Cake Climate 0

Thom talks with Dr. Michael Mann about how the climate seems to be warming more quickly than predicted a decade ago.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that the Mohave desert is becoming uninhabitable for Joshua trees. (Follow the link for the full story.)

In the best-case scenarios, a sharp reduction of greenhouse gases could keep the trees at 18.6% of their historic range — from western Arizona to eastern California, the study found.

The demise of the tree would “represent the collapse of the higher-elevation Mojave Desert ecosystem,” said Patrick Donnelly, the state director for the Center for Biological Diversity. The tree provides food and shelter for many desert animals, he said.

Anyone who denies the reality of climate change is not paying attention, too stupid for words, or on the take (or some combination thereof).

Right here, right now, it’s the heat.

And the heat is a sympton of climate change.

And I thought I was a bit of a pessimist.

Meanwhile, Bob Peckman suggests that, if one wants to discuss scientific topics, one might be wise to pay attention to science.

The Fire This Time 0

Paul Krugman remarks on the apathy which has greeted the burning of Australia. A snippet:

So this should be the moment when governments finally began urgent efforts to stave off climate catastrophe.

But the world isn’t rational. In fact, Australia’s anti-environmentalist government seems utterly unmoved as the nightmares of environmentalists become reality. And the anti-environmentalist media, the Murdoch empire in particular, has gone all-out on disinformation, trying to place the blame on arsonists and “greenies” who won’t let fire services get rid of enough trees.

These political reactions are more terrifying than the fires themselves.

Afterthought:

Unlike Ripley, science doesn’t care whether you believe it or not. Science just is–and will be–regardless of whether anyone believes it.

By the numbers.

Not to mention that we no longer have spring or fall in these parts. We just go right from summer into winter into summer again.

I fear we are well past the tipping point.

Misdirection Play, Climate Crisis Dept. 0

At the Bangor Daily News, Gwynne Dyer reveals industry’s latest tactic to avoid action on carbon emissions. A snippet:

There is now no government in the world — except the United States — that still goes along with the denialism (that man’s use of fossil fuels is primary cause of climate change–ed.). Every major international body has accepted the evidence that climate change is actually happening and that we are the cause.

Time for another change of strategy by the fossil fuel industries and their allies. If they can no longer hope to discredit the science or confuse the public about the evidence, maybe they can at least deflect and divert the pressure for effective action on climate change on to targets that do not directly threaten the sales of their products.

Siberia is thawing out, and it’s not pleasant. Here’s a bit from the story:

Andrey Danilov eased his motorboat onto the gravel riverbank, where the bones of a woolly mammoth lay scattered on the beach. A putrid odor filled the air — the stench of ancient plants and animals decomposing after millennia entombed in a frozen purgatory.

“It smells like dead bodies,” Danilov said.

The low last night was in the low 70 Fahenheits, today’s high is forecast for the 80s. That’s the forecast for the rest of the week. On the last weekend of September and the first week of October.

I grew up in these parts. Back then, by this time of year, I’d be wearing at least a windbreaker to go outside, not shorts and a tee shirt

This is not normal, or perhaps it’s the new abnormal . . . .

The Bully’s Pulpit 0

At AL.com, Mike Oliver responds on Michael Knowles, who went on Fox News to claim that Greta Thunberg is mentally ill. A snippet:

You (Knowles–ed.) showed classic traits of being a bully. In attacking Greta Thunberg, you, Mr. Knowles suggested that Thunberg is delusional or weak-minded and shouldn’t be doing what she is doing: trying to bring awareness to an issue that is of global importance.

Aside from the fact that her mental status had nothing to do with the climate change debate at hand, you were attacking a 16-year-old.
