The Founders argued that the Electoral College would prevent incompetent persons from becoming president. In the Federalist Papers, Alexander Hamilton asserted that

The process of election affords a moral certainty, that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.

Clearly, the Founders were, as my old boss used to say, “in error.”
