Beck and Gall 0

Dave Neiwert fisks Glenn Beck. A nugget:

But a side remark Beck makes is fairly indicative of the problem with this whole enterprise — namely, it is a grossly blinkered version of history, revised and selectively edited to serve as a nice bedtime story for conservatives.

Gun Nuttery 0

Dave Weigel on his experiences at the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot.

Note that no one in the federal administration has said anything about restricting guns.

The passage speaks for itself.

This is a place where vendors can sell T-shirts that read “The Fourth Reich: Obama-Biden 2012,” and “Hitler Gave Great Speeches Too..” and, most succinctly, “Fuck Obama.” It’s somewhere for people with hard-to-explain interests in World War II memorabilia can pick up items from Wehrmacht uniforms (”I’m putting the stuff together to make me a German officer,” says a man buying a Wehrmacht officer’s cap), Adolf Hitler mousepads (”Next time… no more Mr. Nice Guy”), and coffee mugs with Nazi commanders’ faces etched on them.

This leads to a certain skepticism of the media. Mark Stevens, whose Nazi merchandise is not moving very quickly on Saturday, declines to talk about it. “Any publicity from the media is bad publicity,” he explained.

One man asks a vendor if she has any “Impeach Obama” bumper stickers. Initially, he’s open to talking about his problems with the president. “There’s a black man in the White House,” he said. “What else do you need to know?” He suggests that journalism isn’t much of a career and tells me to look for something else to do. But 15 minutes later, he spots me in the range’s gun shop and asks me to cross his name out of my notebook. He grabs the book, grabs a pen, and scratches dark black ink onto the paper. “I don’t know who you are,” he said. “I don’t know if you work for the Southern Poverty Law Center. I don’t know if you work for the government.”

What Talent? 1

Frankly, I don’t see what the fuss is about. These are the people who caused this mess, for Pete’s sake:

There is an air of exodus on Wall Street — and not just among those being fired. As Washington cracks down on compensation and tightens regulation of banks, a brain drain is occurring at some of the biggest ones. They are some of the same banks blamed for setting off the worst downturn since the Depression.

Top bankers have been leaving Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and others in rising numbers to join banks that do not face tighter regulation, including foreign banks, or start-up companies eager to build themselves into tomorrow’s financial powerhouses. Others are leaving because of culture clashes at merging companies, like Bank of America and Merrill Lynch, and still others are simply retiring early.

Duncan:

Warning should’ve been when people started referring to “financial products.” Financial institutions are middlemen, skimmers. They don’t produce anything. “Financial innovation” is almost entirely a ridiculous concept.

Dueling with Ghosts 0

The spirit of McCarthyism is alive and well in Wingnuttia:

Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) puts the number of socialists in the House at 17.

“Some of the men and women I work with in Congress are socialists,” Bachus told local government leaders on Thursday, according to the Birmingham News.

Bachus gave the specific number of House socialists when pressed later by a reporter.

Have they no shame?

A Cup of Tea, with the Pinky Out, Please 0

Field Negro on wingnut tea parties:

I enjoy driving on the nice roads my tax dollars help to fund. I enjoy the security that my tax dollars help to provide for me. I enjoy the protections from poisons and other deadly products that could harm me. I enjoy the fact that veterans who serve my country can be taken care of. I like the fact that when I put my money in the bank it is insured. And I like the fact that most children who cannot afford it can get a free education. I could go on but you get the point: Taxes are painful for some of us, but they are necessary.

Which is why I don’t understand this “Tea Party Protest” that the FAKE NEWS people and conservatives have been planning for a little over a month now.

(snip)

I sense that history is repeating itself here. I mean back in the day the colonists didn’t think it was fair to pay taxes to a government who they didn’t believe represented them. They weren’t being taxed by their government, they were being taxed by the British. These conservatives are no different, his O ness does not represent them, just look at the guy; he is the total opposite of everything they represent, so why pay taxes to his government? Funny, they didn’t seem to mind paying their taxes to fund the two wars that the frat boy started. But hey, the frat boy didn’t have a funny name and a…..well, tan.

Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go 0

Fewer initial unemployment claims this week:

The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, government data showed on Thursday, but was still at levels indicating the labor market’s contraction was yet to bottom.

Well, yeah.

They’re running out of persons to be laid off. Later in the same story (emphasis added):

The Labor Department also said the ranks of unemployed who have claimed more than one week of aid vaulted to yet another record in the last week of March as laid-off workers battled to find new job opportunities amid a recession that is now in its 16th month.

Note that “16th month” figure. That goes back to December 2007, year seven of the Bushonomics.
