Misdirection Plays 1

Robyn Blumner explains why persons magically become “shiftless” as soon as they get laid off:

The problem is a lack of jobs, not a dearth of motivated job-seekers. There is only one available job for every three people looking for work.

But by transforming the unemployed from working Americans who have lost a job through no fault of their own and need a financial bridge until they can find another one, into malingerers bilking the system, politicians are magically absolved of responsibility to help. In fact, the best action the state can take is to motivate these people to be self-reliant by making them more desperate. See: the world according to Paul Ryan.

This is as old as I’ve been alive. It’s just that now it’s a national theology of somewhat less than half the country. If the economy shattered and you can’t find a job, it’s a lifestyle choice, one that involves choosing sin and the devil, as I’ve mentioned before. It’s also obviates doing anything about the economy which is the point and which, de facto, is the status quo now. If you are a Republican you have, by choice, made the decision to turn away from sloth, the devil and sin and therefore, by definition, cannot be unemployed. If you are a Republican who is unemployed, you are not anymore because you chose sin. It’s a neat equation.  Wealthiness leads to Godliness, that’s what Jesus said.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_Xhzo-Obf0 Nothing has changed between before the election in now. It just goes relentlessly around in a circle, the same theology repeated over and over, louder, when possible. We also can’t escape there is much of this deeply embedded in the national character now well over 2 centuries old, the belief that poverty is the pit here preceding your eventual deserved trip to the real Pit. In fact, our time is characterized by it as national policy, beating up on people in lesser, poorer countries where the condition and religion makes them less than human and with the devil. There will always be enough capital in America to justify using some of it to help make sure those without it have it even worse.
