That Sinking Feeling 0

From today’s local rag:

Four Virginia landmarks are among the 30 nationwide threatened by climate change-related weather conditions, according to a report released today by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

(snip)

“Jamestown Island is mostly less than 3 feet of elevation,” she said. “If the high projection is correct, then in 50 years, it would be predominantly under water.”

Levees would do nothing to help, she added. “The water’s actually coming up through the ground as well,” Mitchell said. “It’s a very spongy sort of ground. Just building a levee around it won’t keep the water out.”

I have nothing to add. Just read the rest.

Finally, a fitting label for gun nuts! Krafft-Ebbing would approve.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Yet another polite child:

San Antonio police say a 6-year-old girl has died in an accidental shooting when she and her 8-year-old sister were together while their mother was elsewhere in the home.

In more news of the polite, it seems another gun went off all on its lonesome.

Who led the “Operation American Spring” insurgency?

For that matter, why hasn’t it been properly labeled by the popular media as an “insurgency”?

Persons often ask for them when they are in a trial marriage.

Afterthought:

This gives new meaning to the term, “trial separation.”

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

After all, what can possibly go wrong when the polite pack heat politely?

Police said a man accidentally shot himself in the leg while at a Wal-Mart store in Phoenix on Saturday.

Phoenix police spokesman Officer James Holmes said the man had a gun on his hip and it went off.

Another gun that chose to go off on its own. Are we approaching the singularity of stupid shooting?

Privilege Unseen, as When a Vampire Looks in a Mirror 0

One of the aspects of privilege is the inability to realize that one is privileged.

To put it another way, it’s to accept privilege as one’s due, without question, just as, when I was a kid growing up under Jim Crow, I accepted without question that most black folks did not have nice houses as Just the Way Things Were Meant To Be.

Eugene Kane tries to figure out the Republican fascination for Benghazi and hits on something (much more at the link):

Republicans will tell you the public demands new Benghazi hearings, but much of the public that they speak about probably would be hard-pressed to find Libya on a map. The deaths of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, also often are cited as the main reason for continued focus. But if you ask people to name the four victims, it’s likely many won’t be able to.

The people who have called for the new hearings on Benghazi are often woefully short on facts or even concrete ideas about what the hearings are supposed to be looking for, but they do know Hillary Clinton was secretary of state and President Barack Obama was somehow involved in the loop of information.

For this crowd, that’s all that’s necessary.

In other words, when you got nothing, make something up. Benghazi is the something of the moment.

A Text Case 0

Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, has instituted a SMS (that’s “texting”) 9-1-1 service. Natch, no one could have predicted . . . .

Later that evening, Allegheny County’s 911 center received its first emergency text message, county spokeswoman Amie Downs said. She did not have the exact language of the message, but she said it was someone reporting a possible drunken driver in the city of Pittsburgh.

The language of the message “seemed to indicate that they themselves were driving,” she said.

Pennsylvania has banned texting while driving since 2012.
