I have never been able to distinguish among TGIF, Ruby Tuesday’s, and–what’s that other cookie cutter bar/restaurant chain I forget Hooligan’s?–Houlihans! They are all the same place with different pictures on the walls.

Man watching TV reports from Ferguson, Mo., screaming

Lyndon B. Johnson was correct:

If you can convince the lowest white man that he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll even empty his pockets for you.

There’s no politeness like highly trained politeness.

McMahan was exiting his police cruiser when he accidentally shot himself with his personal firearm, according to DeBusk.

McMahan was accompanied by another officer, and the pair were getting ready to work an extra job at a construction site, DeBusk said. The second officer radioed for help and provided immediate medical care to McMahan, DeBusk said.

Wendell Potter explains the scam. A nugget:

We’ve been told over and over again by politicians and flacks — including me in my previous career — that we have the world’s best health care system. As I explained in Deadly Spin, if you continue to believe that no other country could possibly have a better system than ours, it’s because of the overwhelmingly successful PR campaign my former colleagues and I carried out over decades.

The purpose of that campaign — a campaign that’s ongoing, by the way — is to protect the profitable status quo by obscuring an empirical truth: that when it comes to access to affordable health care, millions of Americans might as well be living in a third world country. And that’s still true today, more than four years after Obamacare became law.

Race Is What Racists Think 0

It’s all in their heads, and nowhere else. Let Notre Dame professor Augustin Fuentes explain. A snippet:

We know that Race is a real thing and that aspects of one’s life and experience are different based on whether one is Black, or White, or Latino and Asian or Native American. We also know that these differences are not because the race categories themselves are actual biological groupings—they aren’t. Races are social and historical creations—they are real for our society but they are neither static nor inevitable nor biological.

Race is a dynamic social category that has changed over time in the USA. For example, in the late 1800s, many groups currently placed in the category “White” (like the Irish or Italian) were not in that category the way they are today. . . . .

Don’t believe what television tells you about intrepid scientists with unlimited time and resources bored overworked underpaid lab techs examining infinitesimal bits of evidence in pursuit of justice.

It ain’t necessarily so.

As of today, the Virginia Department of Forensic Science will no longer perform several kinds of trace evidence examinations, prompting concern from police.

The department said the move, which will affect some examinations of gunshot residue, hair, fiber and other evidence, is the result of required budget cuts.

Politeness promotes relationships.

A SWAT team tried to negotiate with the man, finally entering the home around 7:30 a.m. The team found the man inside dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, said the Attorney General’s office. No law enforcement officials fired any weapons during the incident, authorities said.

Investigators believe the man killed his girlfriend before killing himself at his Hutchinson Street home, about half a mile away.

This relationship, for example, can now never be severed.
