Daniel Ruth considers the House Republicans’ decision to sue President Obama for daring to do his job. A nugget:

In a debate that was a mix of a Jimmy Swaggart revival and a John Birch Society rally, with a healthy dose of scripted tea party talking points, the House voted along party lines to sue President Barack Obama because … well, just because.

Amid all the fife-and-drum weeping and wailing, Obama was accused of being a lawless tyrannical dictator stripping Americans of their freedoms in his pursuit of raw, imperial power. Ooooh, this sounds serious.

So pressing was the clear and present danger to the very core of American values that just as soon as the vote to sue Obama was finished, the House looked forward to vacation for the next five weeks. Now there’s a Minuteman moment for you.

Cleanliness is next to politeness.

Marianne Lee, 26, of 128 Village Court, was attempting to clear a 9 mm pistol for packing for a move to California when the gun fired, according to the release. The bullet went into the wall, ricocheted off a stud, passed through Riley’s living room and then went through his bedroom wall. Riley was struck while in his bed, according to the release.

Another person to stupid to own a gun, another gun that fires itself.

All That Was Old Is New Again 0

Werner Herzog’s Bear muses on the similarities between American politics today and in the 1850s. A nugget:

They (the 1850s Southern Democratic Party–ed.) were a crazy lot who intentionally broke the Democratic party apart in order to hasten secession. This reckless strategy was based in the belief that seceding would be the only long-term way to preserve the South’s slavery-based economic structure. While most white Southerners weren’t as radical, once Abraham Lincoln won the presidency, secession began. Politicians in the Deep South simply refused to accept the legitimacy of the Lincoln administration to the point of leaving the country. . . .

Obviously, if a large number of elected officials refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of the president, the country either falls apart or becomes ungovernable. Although we aren’t in any real danger of civil war today, we are back in a place where the legitimacy of the president has been rejected, leading to strife and a dysfunctional government. As I’ve said before, the Republican Party has ceased to be a party in the traditional sense. It is merely the vehicle for an extremist conservative movement that values its ideology above all else.

The state of “becoming ungovernable” seems to have been attained.

Tampa Bay Times reporters Michael Van Sickler and Craig Pittman reported Sunday that for years some of our august public servants took time out from crusading for responsible government to sneak away to Texas for swanky hunting vacations at the King Ranch with expenses paid by U.S. Sugar.

The Unraveling of the Regency, What’s My Line Dept. 0

Vivian Paige, preeminent local politics blogger and columnist for my local rag, asks, “Will the real Regent please stand up?”

The second day of the McDonnell trial brought the bombshell revelation of a splintered family. I couldn’t help but remember the former governor’s 1989 thesis, which was made public during his gubernatorial campaign. In it, Bob McDonnell lamented the breakdown of the traditional family and proposed specific policy proposals to curb it.

Either McDonnell didn’t take his own advice, or the defense is just an effort to win an acquittal. In either case, the Bob McDonnell of 1989 wouldn’t recognize the Bob McDonnell of 2014.

Be polite in the halls of commerce.

When the employee brought out the manager, Jaudon started yelling and calling the employee vulgar names.

Jaudon then slapped the employee across the face.

The employee grabbed Jaudon and threw her to the ground.

Once separated, Jaudon threatened to kill the employee and admitted that she had a gun.

She then went outside, got a gun out of her vehicle and waved it around, threatening to kill the employee once again.
