“Love Thy Neighbor” 0

Yeah. Right.

An Arkansas man’s husband and family are saddened and dismayed that they have been unable to find a church sanctuary that will allow them to hold his funeral. Even the local firehouse, which was built by his father, has closed its doors to the grieving family, refusing to host a reception or memorial for James Stone, who died at the age of 32 in January.

The Dallas Voice reported that Stone’s husband, Jay Hoskins, has been trying to find a place to memorialize his partner since Stone’s death on January 19.

These folks must worship some Jesus I never heard of.

When I was twelve, I went hunting with my father and we shot a bird. He was laying there and something struck me. Why do we call this fun to kill this creature who was as happy as I was when I woke up this morning.

When the Salk vaccine against poleo became available, my parents hied me to the doctor immediately because we had seen too many pictures like this on our telly vision.

“It’s My Party and I’ll Cry If I Want To” 0

Chauncey Devega cuts to the Chait about those who moan that there is too much “political correctness.”

Of course, the central problem with the white male victimologist “anti-p.c.” crowd is that they want the exclusive right to beat and stab people–especially people of color, women, gays and lesbians, and the Other, more generally–around the head and body with cold and sharp steel while the latter are either 1) disarmed or 2) only allowed to respond with “kid friendly” and safe weapons. Here, the privileged and the in-group are hypocrites; their hypocrisy is most readily apparent when a member of the powerful and the privileged group cry about how they are somehow “oppressed” or “disadvantaged.”

Do read the rest.

Afterthought:

The dirty little secret of the “anti-PC” crowd is this:

They want to be rude and crude, by Heavens, your feelings be damned. If they hurt your feelings, it must be your own damned fault for having feelings.

An Impulse to Selfie-Destruction 0

Honest to Pete, you can’t make this stuff up:

“Selfies” likely contributed to a single-engine plane crash east of Denver last May that killed two people, federal investigators said in a report released last week.

The National Transportation Safety Board said a GoPro video camera was found near the plane’s wreckage in Watkins, about 25 miles east of Denver. Recordings on the device showed the pilot and a passenger were taking “self-photographs” with their cellphones, using the flash during the plane’s takeoff roll, intitial climb and flight, the NTSB said.

And, in related news of the narcissistic . . .

Yet more youthful politeness:

A 4-year-old boy accidentally shot his uncle in the stomach after finding a gun on the floor of a house, Milwaukee police said Friday.

The gun nut says he put the gun on the floor as he was preparing for a trip to the range.

When I was in high school, back before the NRA went from a hunting safety association to a gun marketing outfit, I think I remember this from one of the gun safety classes the local NRA taught during PE:

Step One: Retrieve gun from gun rack.
Step Two: Put gun on floor.
      Step Three: ???????
      Step Four: Freedom.

Then again, maybe not.

The Pile Next Time 0

Hilary Sargent and Roberto Scalese of Boston.com attempt a taxonomy of snow shovelers on the sidewalks in Beantown. Here’s a bit from one that seems too true to be funny (emphasis in the original):

3. THE LIBERTARIAN: There are no rules for the libertarian. His goal is to shovel his place as efficiently and cheaply as possible. Dump snow in the street? Sure. Over in the neighbor’s yard? Absolutely. Does his snow pile half-bury the next guy’s car? Sorry, them’s the breaks.

“We Know Where You Are” 0

The Bangor Daily News reprints a Bloomberg article on the explosive growth in the use of automobile license plate scanners, leaving you no place for privacy. Here’s a bit; follow the link for the rest:

It appears a new reality is emerging in which simply leaving home in your car makes you a likely target of surveillance. But, as efficient and effective as license plate scanners appear to be, they carry huge costs as well. The auto industry — which is already struggling to maintain its long-term marketing strategy of associating car ownership with that emotional touchstone personal freedom — may find that these profound social shifts further erode its pitch that “we don’t sell cars, we sell freedom.” Without their appeal to freedom, automobiles will struggle to compete with more pragmatic (if nontraditional) alternatives, such as car sharing and public transportation.

But the use of license plate scanners and other car surveillance techniques may already be so embedded as to prevent any rollback. And with private companies leading the way in normalizing surveillance in the name of financial savings — as Progressive Insurance has done with its Snapshot program, which offers discounts in return for collecting data about driver activity and behavior — the public may already be so inured to it as to quell any public outrage to the recent revelations.

“An Armed Society Is A Polite Society” 0

Be polite when you are with a patrolman:

As Officer Diaz approached the vehicle the driver began frantically waving his hands and arms at him.

According to the police report, upon approaching the vehicle, Officer Diaz learned the driver, Brandon Lee McCraw, 20, of 6402 E. NC Hwy. 108 in Mill Spring, had removed a firearm from a holster at his side to place on the seat and intended to advise the officer of his possession of a firearm.

In the process of removing the weapon from its holster, McCraw shot himself in the hip with one round, with an exit wound in the thigh.
