Running Commentary 0

The resident curmudgeon at my local rag went to the movies for the first time in a while. She found it not to be a pleasant experience. Oh, the movie was okay; the audience, though, didn’t get even one star. A snippet.

My showing of “The Martian,” for instance, came equipped with a narrator nearby who provided an almost nonstop play-by-play in a loud whisper. No extra charge.

I couldn’t make out everything said, but the steady, distracting drone sounded something like this:

“Matt Damon,” she muttered as the actor who played astronaut Mark Watney appeared on the screen.

The Fix 4

Hedrick Smith points out the the Republican House of Representatives is under the control of Gerry Mander and his entire staff. A bit:

Gerrymandering? Mention it and most of the current generation of political reporters roll their eyes, dismissing it as an age-old and therefore irrelevant political malady.

But they are missing a central point: One root cause of the mutiny that ousted Speaker John Boehner and blocked House Majority leader Kevin McCarthy is the Great Republican Gerrymander of 2011, which helped elect and now protects the 45 ideological insurgents in the House.

Be polite at the picture show.

Law enforcement authorities in Salina are investigating an accidental shooting Friday night at the Starplex Theater in the Mall on South 9th Street.

“A man’s gun went off and I believe the theater was evacuated,” said Police Sergeant Gary Hanus.

Because guns in theatres are always a good idea . . . .

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

The hunt for politeness goes on. Indeed, the woods teem with responsible gun owners.

A teen is dead after she was shot in an apparent hunting accident Thursday afternoon in Anderson County, officials said. . . .

Robert McCollough with the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said the teen’s foster father accidentally shot her in the chest with a high power rifle, McCullough said.
