“Two Different Wars, We Fight in Two Different Wars” 0

Southern Beale suggests that, as regards Kim Davis, many-time married opponent of gay marriage, the discussion is taking place on two different and unrelated levels:

Once again, liberals are arguing a point of logic and fact, while conservatives are arguing hurt fee fees about losing another battle in the culture wars. Look: the fight over gay marriage and the subsequent martyrdom of Kim Davis has zero to do with the Bible. It’s not about religion or theology. Like all culture war issues, it’s about conservatives’ lack of cultural relevance. It’s about how they’ve lost the culture wars and the poor dears just can’t deal with it.

Profiles in Carnage 0

Shaun Mulling profiles the Trump supporter.

Trump is so wildly popular because not because he is the Anti-Hillary, but because he is the ideal Republican candidate for 2016, a tabloid headline man with a plan although he has no plan, and so divinely unserious and unpresidential, so unwilling to dog whistle like his code-talking opponents, so opposed to what passes for GOP orthodoxy, that he is the antidote for what ails the many people drawn to him: Xenophobic, racist and conspiracy freakish white males — and awful lot of woman folk, too — who are neither policy oriented nor particularly ideologically inclined, and whose very American-ness is being challenged by fears over immigrants (and by inference blacks and other minorities), income disparity, the power of the elites, and a demographic tide that is fast running out on them.

Selfie Indulgence 0

A selfie of stupid: If you’re in a tie with a train, you lose.

Police are searching for an unidentified BART rider who reportedly took a picture of himself lying on the tracks, and in the process caused a 30-minute systemwide delay Monday night, police said.

When I worked for the railroad, I noted a fact: A train never strikes a “person.” A train always strikes a “trespasser.”

Stray Question 0

Will there come a time when persons who have carnal thoughts be willing to admit that their thoughts are their thoughts, and not some phenomenon foisted upon them by outside agency?

Really, now, if you have a dirty mind, own up to it, take pride in it, revel in it, and, for Pete’s sake, stop blaming others for your carnal thoughts.

They are your thoughts and no one else’s.

Full disclosure:

I have nothing against dirty minds. Mine’s as dirty as they come.

I do have lots of things against hypocrites and Miss (and Mr.) Grundys.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

On the road, make sure you have the polite-of-way.

According to police, the victim, 26-year-old Demario Thompkins, exchanged words with the other driver after the minor accident near Greenfield. That’s when police say the other driver pulled a gun and shot the man in the head.

Police say Thompkins’ girlfriend and his one-year-old son were in the car when he was shot and killed but were unharmed.

“Truth in Labeling” 0

Kim Davis piously entering cell with her hands folded and her imagined halo while casting shadow of Satan labeled

Truth is a concept that the right eschews. Leonard Pitts, Jr., sums it up (emphasis added):

The political right has long had a genius for wrapping noxious notions in code that sounds benign and even noble. The “Patriot Act,” “family values” and “right to work” are fruits of that genius. “Religious liberty” is poised to become their latest masterpiece, the “states’ rights” of the battle for a more homophobic America.

Rising Above 0

Steve Watson thinks that Donald Trump may be petering out (full argument at the link).

Trump forces us to revisit the almost-forgotten Peter Principle. In short, he is a textbook case of the successful individual rising in stature and position until he reaches his downfall, at the lofty level of his human incompetence.

I fear he is mistaken. “Competence” and “Republican governance” are distinct and unrelated concepts.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

The polite build families at the confluence of guns and stupid.

Police said the man is a concealed carry permit holder and was preparing to go target shooting when the incident occurred.

He was removing the magazine from the 9 mm handgun when a round was discharged and struck his wife (in the ankle–ed.), according to police.

Note how the phrasing implies that the weapon somehow mysteriously fired itself all on its ownsome.

If it was an accident, why was he pointing the damn gun in the general direction of another person?
