The Age of Delightenment 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Clifford Lazarus laments the growth of willful scientific ignorance. A snippet:

When our leaders cannot understand the difference between a casual “theory” and a scientific one; when they base their policy decisions on feelings instead of facts (actual facts, not “alternative facts” because a real fact is arrived at precisely because the alternatives have been disproven); when they operate based on opinions and preconceptions rather than verifiable evidence; and when they enact laws based on pure faith instead of rationality and reason; nothing good will result.

Much Ado about Something 0

Most of the commentary on Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office has focused on how little he has accomplished in terms of legislation and executive orders which get enjoined almost immediately.

Will Bunch, in contrast, thinks there have been significant–and corrosive–accomplishments. Here’s an excerpt from his article:

Editorials headlines about “the big yawn” should be a clue that the plan is working. Yes, it’s true that Trump is nowhere close to delivering some of the cataclysmic policy changes that he promised during his campaign: The repeal of Obamacare, the “great wall” on the southern border, the Muslim ban, etc., etc. Don’t let those failures lull you into a false sense of security. Trump has already sledgehammered the basic trust between Americans and their government in ways that will take years to repair.

Follow the link to find out why he said that.

Big Brother, Meet Big Johnson 0

From El Reg:

Amie Stepanovich, the US policy manager at Access Now, said that the FTC “must send a clear message to the adult Internet of Things industry that bad security will not be tolerated. These devices can give access to people’s most private information and they are being put on the market with laughably weak security settings.”

Access Now urged the FTC to investigate the $249 sex toy, stating such an investigation was “even more important given the growing trend to provide internet connectivity for sex toys and other related products without proper thought given to digital security problems.”

Honest to Betsy (Pete’s off today), you can’t make this stuff up.

I was able to fix it (quite impressing myself along the way). Here’s what I did, in case you encounter this error yourself.

“An Armed Society Is a Polite Society” 0

Just another day in the NRA’s Garden of Eden.

On Martaevious Santiago’s 17th birthday, he shot his 13-year-old sister in the back of the head.

She had just hugged him in the kitchen of the family’s Florida City home, police said. As they separated and Tedra King walked away, Martaevious pointed a loaded semi-automatic handgun at her. Then he pulled the trigger and killed her.

Martaevious told police it was an accident.

More guns would have no doubt prevented this.

You too should check out OTR.net. You’ll be glad you did. (But you must be able to play audio in Real format, and, as RealPlayer no long supports a Real operating system, that is, Linux, you must have access to Windows or Crapple).

(Oh my, I’ve turned into such a Linux geek.)
