From Pine View Farm

In case you wonder what lies white Southerners tell to convince themselves and others that the Civil War was not about slavery and theft of labor based on race, you need look no further than this heaping mound of propaganda which for some fool reason a reputable newspaper has published.

How do I know that this is Southern propaganda?

Because it’s the sort of stuff I heard over and over when I was a young white Southerner growing up under Jim Crow. Most Southerners don’t want to admit, even to themselves, that their ancestors fought to preserve chattel slavery, even though every state that seceded cited preservation of slavery in its secession documents.

By the way, he is affiliated with an outfit called “News with Views” (find it yourself; I refuse to link to it). I looked at it and sought out some reviews of it (of which there were not many, none favorable). It is news with view, only one.

I note that the author has a Ph. D. In the immortal words of my old and departed friend, Bud Zimmerman,

B. S., M. S. and Ph. D too often translate to “bullshit, more shit, and pile it higher and deeper.”

Afterthought:

I do not waste my time reading “comments,” but I must remember to check the News and Observer’s letters column the next few days.

The underlying reason for the Civil War was quite simple — it was economic. The economic component was quite simple — slavery. Cuddy’s take is by no means novel, but it is akin to saying Hitler really wasn’t a bad dude.

As I’ve said, I’ve heard this all before. Nothing new about how he tried to put lipstick on this particular pig.
