Fly the Fiendly Skies 0

You can’t top this.

Emily O’Connor wrote on Twitter that while preparing to fly March 2 from Birmingham in the United Kingdom to the Canary Islands, she was informed by Thomas Cook staff that her outfit – a cropped top with spaghetti straps and high-waist pants that exposed a section of her midriff – was “inappropriate” and “causing offense.”

O’Connor had no trouble getting through airport security, but said at least four staff members surrounded her once she boarded her flight, prepared to forcibly remove her from the plane if she didn’t change.

Aside:

Not being familiar with the term “crop top,” I did a web search.

“Crop top” appears to be new speak for a “halter top” that is longer than a traditional halter top. Based on the images I saw, I’d have to say that Thomas Cook Airlines needs to have its mind washed out with soap.

Polite politicos:

A top aide to a Missouri state senator was arrested after a loaded gun fell to the floor during a fight at a Jefferson City bar, according to Cole County authorities.

Jared Brown, of Malden, was booked into jail after police were called to the Spectator’s Bar and Grill early last Thursday. Brown, who is chief of staff for Republican Sen. Justin Brown, had not been officially charged as of Wednesday. The two are not related.

A police report said a 9mm pistol loaded with five rounds fell to the floor. It was recovered by another bar patron and Jared Brown, 45, was arrested, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

A Vast Wastetime 0

At Psychology Today Blogs, Mike Brooks argues that no one really cares about your “social” media posts, certainly not in proportion to the amount of time most “social” media users spend using “social” media. He offers several arguments.

Among other arguments, he suggest that others care about your posts to the same degree that you care about theirs:

If you were able to recall someone’s post from last week that you “liked,” how much time did you spend thinking about their post after liking it? My guess is, “None.” This assumes a previously “liked” post did not pop back up on your social media feed for other reasons.

The Payola of the Privileged 0

I am not surprised at the college admissions cheating indictments, particularly as they involve ersatz athletes and corrupt coaches. The corruption of college athletics has been obvious to anyone who would look for a long long time. It is why I can no longer enjoy watching college football games on New Year’s Day.

At the core of the scandal is the fear of powerful, wealthy, privileged persons that their privilege was not enough to get them what they felt they or their children were due simply because of who they were, so they decided that their privilege included the right to cheat.

At The Sacramento Bee, Marcos Breton writes a powerful essay that highlights the other side of this coin: persons who are accused of being undeserving because of the spelling of their last name or the color of their skin, those whom the jealous privileged accuse of being “tokens.”

Here’s a bit:

If your parents were from Mexico like mine, then this was the drill: Your place in college was secured by tokenism. Or so you were told by “friends.” And when you were hired for your chosen field, as I was hired by the San Jose Mercury News and then The Bee, then you were a “minority hire.” Or so you were told by “friends.”

I struggle to express the hole these indignities burned in me when I was naive and young and unaware of the social, political and cultural upheaval caused by the integration of white collar jobs and universities, a process that began before I came of age in the 1980s, but was in full backlash mode when I cluelessly took my place in the line of American opportunity.

Farron discusses the new robber cyber-barons.

Methinks Farron has a point when he says that “they don’t know what the hell they are doing.”

They know the tech, but ethics and integrity are concepts foreign to them.

For them, the guiding moral principle is “because I can.”

There’s a reason movie actors use blanks.

Kalesha Peterson, 37, told police she was drinking alcohol and watching a movie with her boyfriend David Dalton at their home Thursday before the shooting in Fulton, about 100 miles west of St. Louis.

Peterson said Dalton suggested they re-enact a scene involving a gun. Peterson said she got a .38 caliber revolver from the bedroom and accidentally shot Dalton, the station reports.

The Bully’s Pulpits 0

Laurie Helgoe argues that today’s American cultures seems to encouraging an increasing degree of destructive narcissism in both private and public life. A snippet:

As much as destructive narcissism consumes relationships, American culture has a particular talent for feeding the beast. Where there is narcissism, there is drama, and reality TV is ready to capture it. Divas with big jewelry and dyed hair, so-called victims whose attacks on others are always justified, spew venom to the camera. Slighted bullies. Commentators with their authoritative take on the world get more and more room to openly insult the object of their commentary. Bullies only defending their positions. A billionaire tycoon flaunts his power over his celebrity staff, barking out “You’re fired!” as the recurring punchline.
