The Rule of Lawless, Unpardonable Dept. 0

Leonard Pitts, Jr., notes that some persons think that, as Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon, so too should Joe Biden pardon Donald Trump. He observes

The idea of pardoning Trump — which Biden has already rejected — has been kicking around the pundit sphere quite a bit recently, proposed by everyone from columnists E.J. Montini and David Leibowitz to former Trump aide Anthony Scaramucci and former House Judiciary Committee counsel Michael Conway.

Pitts goes on to argue that the two situations, America after Watergate and America after a litany of Trumpgates, are in no way analogous, advancing four reasons why pardoning Donald Trump for his conduct while president would be a travesty. He makes his case far more cogently than I can paraphrase or summarize it.

I commend his article to your attention.

Aside:

Along the lines of emphasizing how the times of Trump and the times of Nixon diverge, I call your attention to this dystopian possibility raised in all seriousness by Eric Haseltine over at Psychology Today Blogs.

Finally, this is website is a hobby. It's a hobby in which I am deeply invested, about which I care deeply, and which has enabled me to learn a lot about computers and computing, but it is still ultimately an avocation, not a vocation; it is certainly not a money-making enterprise (unless you click the "Donate" button--go ahead, you can be the first!).
