War and Mongers of War 0

Der Spiegel has a fascination interview with historian Timothy Snyder focusing on Vladimir Putin’s Russia and its war on Ukraine. It goes into a depth not seen in most U. S. reporting.

Here’s a tiny little excerpt from Snyder’s remarks:

Putin is pursuing practical goals as well as ideological ones in Ukraine. The practical side is that he’s governing an oligarchic Russia which can’t be reformed as long as he is in power. Ukraine is extremely important for Putin because if democracy were to work there, it would look better than Russia. And that would be a real problem for Putin. Given that he can’t make things better in Russia, he tries to make the West look worse, beginning in Ukraine, in the minds of Russians, but also in reality. That’s why he supported Brexit and Donald Trump and fueled scandals in Germany.

Still Rising Again after All These Years 0

Missouri’s attempt at Nullification v. 2.0 fails in Federal Court, as anyone who understands the concept of a federal republic could have predicted.

Nullification was all the rage in the slave states the 1850s.

To cut through the multi-syllabic verbiage, nullification was an attempt to secede without actually seceding, and the New Secesh have decided to give it another whirl.

Afterthought:

As Mark Twain said, “History does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes.”

Hoist on His Own Petard 0

The Chicago Tribune’s Clarence Page offers a perceptive perspective on the perturbing performance of Scott Adams, the Dilbert cartoonist, who has recently been in the news for recommending racism.

Adams, you may recall, got worked up because of a survey in which a significant minority of black person answered “no” to a survey question. I was particularly struck by this bit, which indicates that Adams punk’d himself:

“It’s Okay To Be White” is a slogan popularized in late 2017 as a trolling campaign by members of the controversial discussion board 4chan, according to the Anti-Defamation League. The idea behind the campaign was to choose an apparently innocuous slogan and put it on flyers or websites in public locations and “own the libs,” as the alt-right calls anything that upsets liberals, thus “proving” that liberals don’t think it’s “OK” to be white.

In other words, it’s a trick question — and Adams, who leans quite conservative on such matters, appears to have been a bit too eager to fall for it.
